Default Background question

Hi

Thinking of converting my boring Exo Terra background into a waterfall by siliconing rocks etc to this - but wanted to cover the background to make it more realistic. I see that people stick coco fibre granules to the background but what do they use to stick it? clearly it has to waterproof and non-toxic to frogs - what should I use?

Thanks

Thanks - have got some clear aquarium silicone (my local does not the black silicone anymore) and was going to us this to stick rocks etc - but how can I spread this evenly over the rest of the background? Surely it is quite difficult to do with silicone as it lumpy, is not easily spread evenly and starts to set quickly? Also it would take me a couple of tubes surely just to do a 30x45 background and will be quite expensive. Heard someone else used tile grout and varnish but was not sure about this ..... particularly the varnish.

you can do the grout method, but its for making a rock effect background, and IMO the cocoa fibre style looks better for frogs, so thats what i do.

As for the silicone, its not lumpy at all when wet, you just work in small patches, get some rubber gloves, an old knife to spread it out evenly, and then work in patches over the whole b/g. Squirt some silicone on, smooth it over, get a big handful of soil/ecoearth, and press it on. Then i tend to go for an area as far away from the 1 you did as possible, and do that bit. After that bits done, life the b/g and see the excess soil fall off, so you know where to recover. It does tend to cover a little patchily, so i'd schedule 2 days for it, do what you can on day 1, let it cure and then on day 2, go back over the bare bits with more soil, bits of moss, stones, lichen etc... and fill it in. then let it cure again.

oh and yea, it is expensive for the silicone, but i wouldnt risk using the normal stuff incase it harmed the animals. I use about 1 1/2 of the largest size tubes in a Caulking gun for an 18X24 background. the silicone is cheaper on eBay by far, and poundland sell caulking guns

Oh and if you want to see mine being done check out the viv design section on my website, TreasureCrest- High quality Crested Geckos its under the 'advanced gravel bottom'

Cheers for the advice - have now started my exo terra background conversion into a waterfall with coco fibre and slate. Put the first layer of fibre on with PVA (Andrew at Pollywog confirmed this would be ok) and siliconed the slate in place.

Now to put the 2nd and probably 3rd layers on .....

Very nice viv btw on the website, and will put some pictures up when mine is done.
