Unhappy Need Help With Newt Problems

I only had my newts a week but im quite worried about them only one seems to be eating well. the others i haven't seen eating and one seems to spend all its time in a little cave at the bottom (which i don't mind) but never seems to come up to eat. ive been trying to feed them "can of worms" meal worms and live wax worms. the newts aren't quite full grown yet (but fully developed) do you think i should be feeding them juvenile stuff such as brine shrimp.

my second problem i dont think in totally newt related but is something im worried about my bog wood that i have in my tank seems to covered in a translucent slime (before you ask yes i soaked my bog wood for 2days) any ideas what this stuff is and is it bad for the newts???? should i take the wood out?????

thanks for any help

trie pin head crickets ,or diced up worms , but remove any worms not eatin foul up very quickly,
as to your bog wood slime isnt good remove out of tank and 2 days soaking isnt long enough its nearer the 2 week mark.

What species of newt are these?.

Supposing all the other factors such as temperatures etc are correct...

Drop the mealworms, and ditch the brine shrimp. Give them bloodworm, preferably fresh. No healthy newt will refuse these if hungry. Let us know how it works out.

My newts( red spotted newts) happily eat frozen bloodworm, its cheap, free from bacteria etc, and ALWAYS eaten up. They do like very small crickets, small flies, chopped small earthworms-must be free from pestecides though. If they are staying at the bottom, maybe the water is too cold. I use a broad spectrum uv light, and that heats the water up well. Mine have just started laying eggs, so I guess I'm doing something right!

Pollywog do a newt food which they go for BIG TIME. Try and do a search on google or something, but i think its just pollywog.co.uk - though i may be wrong.

I think its listed as amphibian food, but mine go crazy as soon as it hits the water.

waters room temp im pretty sure the one that stay at the bottom is just scared of me i do see him from time to time (i cant really see into the cave very well) but when he sees me he just runs of back to his hidey hole.

can i ask how do u feed your newts do u feed them one at a time (with tongs) or leave food in the tank. if you put it in the tank do u leave it in a certain area or just put it in the water and fish it out if its not eaten or just put it on the land section???

thanks for the help so far ive got some lab grown "guaranteed parasite free" live bloodworms on the way and some frozen ones.
also ive heard that keeping a few aquatic snails in with the newts is good since they help keep the water clean. any1 do this and what species should i be looking at (from what ive read chinese mystery snails are a good bet since they ive in the same areas in the wild)

i put every-thing into a shallow bowl for feeding away from the main body of water, and the ownly sure way of keeping water clean is a little filter ,mines ownly 6w and cost me thinks around the 6.99 mark and 30% water changes weekly with bottled or treated water or tap water stood for 24h .
buy keeping food in same bowl you can tell if its been eatin and easliy clean it as well.
