Default Froggy

Hi Guys

This is a real shot in the dark.
My friend at work told me his neice has been bought a frog for her birthday and it is kept in a gold fish bowl with no decoration and nothing to climb on or under.
Now i was under the impression frogs need to escape the water at some point but this little thing apparently just sits on the bottom and does very little, not suprising as it must be bored.
I dont know which type of frog it is as this was just a passing conversation but any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

It's most likely either a Xenopus or Hymenochirus purchased from an aquarists. They are fully aquatic, I would advise putting some plant in the tank at least. If it's a Xenopus they should be aware that the females are capable of reaching in excess of 10cm.

Ah ha that sounds like it my mate told me that they bought a male as the females are big.
So they'll be fine but just add a bit of interest?
Thanks

well if it is a Xenopus even males reach 8cm so the bowl may get too small as it grows, I wouldn't advise anything smaller than a 24" aquarium for a single adult.

look at the front feet, if they are webbed then it's a hymenochirus,
if they aren't webbed and have 3 toes it's a xenopus.
