Default How wet should my substrate be?

Hello Guys,

I've had my pacman for a couple of months now and really enjoying the experiance, he seems to be a very happy chap in his little enclosure but I wanted to get your advice on how wet his substrate should be.

On the surface my substrate appears to be moderatly moist, however, as the water sinks in, down about an inch or so into the substrate it really does become very wet. For instance, in his little burrow, when he hops out to go to for his morning jog it is filled with water, like a little pool.

I also notice he is fairly infrequent in using his water bowl, I can tell as the water stays clean for days and days at a time, my understanding is that they used it very regularly to drink?

He seems quite happy, my only concern is that if its too wet the water will get a little stagnent and not be particularly hygenic.

How moist do you keep your substrates?

On a side note, I've noticed that on occasion the frog seems to loose the brightness of his colours and becomes a very dark greeny brown colour all over, is this perhaps him sheading his skin?

Robert

I presume your using a coco type soil in which case it wants to be moist enough to get a few drops of water out when squeezed.
If his substrate is as wet as you say it won't use the water bowl as it has no need for it.

Hi Pollywog,

Thanks for getting back to me mate. I am indeed using a coco fibre based substrate, one of the ecoterra ones I think.

It sounds as if I'm keeping it too wet at the moment then, tommorow is clean out day so I'll try keeping it dryer this time around and see how he likes it.

What do you think about the darker skin tone? is that normal? or is perhaps just in need of a clean?

They do apear to change brightness of colour slightly for no particular reason, nothing to worry about.

I get fresh locusts on a weekly basis, next weeks delivery won't be till wednesday due to the bank holiday so if you order over the weekend I can ensure to get enough on my order.
The earthworms vary in size, I can now start picking them from my wormery again as the weathers picked up so should be able to pick sizes to suit.
