Hello Guys,
After a recent problem with an over warm Gecko I'm looking for some advice on where my thermo and hygro sensors should be placed in my frog enclosure. I've got an exo-terra viv with the digital thermo and hygro sensors and its housing a ornate horned frog. Where should the sensor nodes be? should they be placed in the substrate? buried to the same sort of depths as the frog? or attached to the side of the tank monitoring the air? Thanks guys for your advice, Robert |

I've always believed in the air at the coolest part of the tank i.e. furthest away from the heat source. Your frogs substrate shouldn't overheat unless you're heating from underneath which you shouldn't be and as long as their skin is damp and they have water you should be fine.

OK, interesting.
At the moment I am heating the tank from underneath with a exo-terra jungle mat. I didnt realize I wasnt meant to be warming his substrate. You're right though, it doesnt overheat, with the mat the substrate sits pretty consistantly between 75F and 80F and the frog seems relativly happy. Air temps in the tank are about 70F dropping to the late 60's at nightime. I have a light canopy with one of the really low level UV / natural light bulbs which keep the plants happy and a moonlight bulb which offers a minimal amount of heat into the air. I did consider placing a sun glo bulb in thier to raise the ambient air temperature is this the best measure? or should I look at placing the mat on the back of the tank? At the moment the frog is perfectly healthy and happy and he's been in this setup for around 2 months, he definitly prefers the warm side though and tends not to venture onto the unheated substrate very often. What do you think? Robert |
