Question European Green Toad (Bufo Viridis)

Hi,

I have two European Green Toads that I have had for a year. I went into a pet shop to get a White's Tree Frog and came back with them as the pet shop owner did not want them any longer. I had a European Green Toad previously but sadly he died from an infected foot

I have noticed recently one of my toads (Ernie) has been losing weight, my other toad (Burt) is much quicker at catching all the food. So I have been feeding Ernie individually to ensure he is getting food. This is so far proving successful and he is putting on weight. However I noticed this evening when feeding Ernie, that Burt is jumping at Ernie with his mouth open. Is this normal for toads to show this behaviour over food? I have no idea if they have always been this way but I have never witnessed this behaviour before.

Oh and by the way don't let their names deceive you, they may not both me male. I keep meaning to check to see what sex they are but as they protest when being handled I have not wanted to stress them out. It is definately something I should do. They have as far as I am aware always lived together spending most of their life in a small vivarium at the pet shop with Whites Tree Frogs.

Thanks

Emma.

I am no expert - but I think alot of animals can become aggressive and competative when food is concerned. It would seem that the dominent toad is asserting his/her authority and the other toad out of fear has been missing some of his/her meals. Splitting them up at meal times may be the best thing ....
