Question White's Tree Frog

Hey guys. I'm not completly new to taking care of amphibians. I have been catching and taking care of local salamanders and toads, but want to move onto something more exotic.

I was thinking about the White's Tree Frog. But I have ALOT of questions, and if you could answer them I would gladly apreciate it!

1. What is the price range of these animals?
2. Can they be kept in room temperature?
3. How large should the tank be?
4. What should the "habitat" consist of? Water? Dirt?
5. How should they be fed? (Examples: Once a day, once a week...)

That's about all for now. I'll keep you all updated.

Sincerely, Mihogan

But to summarise...

1. What is the price range of these animals? - about £10-25 depending on age, where you get it from, locality
2. Can they be kept in room temperature? - summer yes, winter i boost them with a heat mat. 23-30 C is ideal range.
3. How large should the tank be? - 20gal for 1st frog, then additional 10gal for each extra frog. They do like their space and really use it. go as big and tall as possible
4. What should the "habitat" consist of? Water? Dirt? - not too much water, not good swimmers and nothing too loose as they can get impacted. See my substrate section is best. lots of choices
5. How should they be fed? (Examples: Once a day, once a week...) When young, every day, when adut everyother day. dust livefood every time you feed if using 'treefrog dust' or 2-3 times a week if using general supplements i.e. nutrobal. Make sure you get one with D3 in.

Sorry to double post bud, but I have a tank right now. But its definetly not 20 gallons. Here are the dimensions: 16 inches x 11 inches x 8 inches. I am not sure of the gallons, so I hope the dimensions give you an idea of the size. I am only going to buy one, so I hope this will be OK. What do you think?

To be honest, thats only really good for a baby. I have 1 a little bigger than that as quarintine. They REALLY do use the space. I have 3 in a 45X45X60 tall exoterra, thats over 40gallons and they use it all. yours works out at about just under 10 so i dont think its really good enough for a permanent tank. Fine as a baby temporary house. They also like more height that that as they like to climb.

If you're limited to space, think about some of the smaller species, you'd just about fit an american Green tree frog in that, although again, you want ore height than length. I assume you like the arboreal ones (like me) but if youre considering terrestrial species too have a look at firebellied toads (you'd fit 1 in that tank) or a Pacman frog could probably live in that for a while. They get v.big as full grown so you'd need to upgrade but dont move much so woud last a little while in that size. To be honest, the minimum recommended for any frog is 10gallons. They jump when they hunt so too small a tank results in the smashing their face up on the glass walls and they hurt their noses

OK thanks. Is there any health problems with this tank? If I were to buy one and stick it in that tank, how would it hurt it. But please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to be a smart alek. But I am just wondering, because my parents just bought me the tank and I can't get another.

I'm not going to say that if you put a frog in that tank it will die. But it wont be happy.

Despite the physical problems of not being able to hunt without bashing its nose against the glass and not getting enough exercise (whites are prone to obesity anyway which will kill) you have to consider the fact that reptiles and amphibians dont express emotion and discomfort the same way mammals and birds do. If you own a cat or hamster or something, it is generally easier to identify with its signals that its unwell or unhappy as they are similar to our own methods of showing discomfort. i.e crying/making shrill noises, sleeping alot etc. With amphibians and reptiles its harder to interpret the signs, which means we dont tend to see they're there until the problem is fairly severe.

A whites tree frog needs space to hunt, exersize, explore and feel comfortable. Its also beneficial to have a warmer end and a cooler end so that if conditions are not perfect it can move to a place it prefers, which you cant provide in a small tank. Whites tree frogs are nocturnal, and so it can be pretty hard to tell if its less active than normal (unless you stay up all night watching it). The only way you could really tell if it was unhappy is if it stopped eating, and they're pigs so its not always reliable.
If you really want a Whites, then tell your parents that it wont be happy in that sie tank and im sure they'll understand. You could even offer to pay the extra to get a proper sized one. Im sure they'd rather you got a nice size tank that it'll be happy in so a) you can enjoy your pet more watching it be happy and b) it'll be less likely to have problems which can lead to expensive vet bills.

Whites are fantastic creatures and awesome pets, but theres no point in having an animal if you cant provide the basics for it to be happy. I would rather not have the animal than have it and know it needs more to be happy. I generally always go for larger enclosures than are the recommended 'minimum', But i do understand that not everyone has that ability. If you look at some 20gallon tanks you will see it wont make much difference to how much space it takes up in your room, but it'll make a hell of a difference to the space the frog has to live in.

Im sure you've got alot to think about so il leave it at that. If you want more advise im always happy to give you my opinion, pm me if you dont want to start a new thread. If you want to convince your parents then show them the benefits having a tank that bit bigger will have.
