Default African Dwarf Clawed froggies

Hi guys,

I'm a new froggy owner (well will be soon!) and am going to pick my two African Dwarves up next Friday. I decided to go for a beginner's species and was told these would be the best type - I also like the idea of them being aquatic!

I am setting my tank up this Friday and going to pick the new froglets up the Friday after to give the tank time to settle.

What sorts of things should I know? I have looked up a lot and I understand you can feed frozen bloodworms and boneshrimps? do I need to feed anything live? I really don't want to have to be keeping live bugs... I can see one of the moggies pushing them over and crickets EVERYWHERE!

I'm going out to get some silk plants for the tank but would real be better? And should I use a filter or clean them more regularly as I know baby dwarves have been known to get stuck in filters and drown

Will two be ok for eachother? It's only a small tank so don't want to over fill it, and they won't be in with fish.

Basically, I want to make sure I'm fully prepared to give these froglets a good home!

Thanks!

I keep african clawed frogs, the ones i have a quite big tho they are not the dwarf species, but the care is pretty much the same i would guess. I feed mine on frozen bloodworm, frozen beefheart, reptomin and cooked prawn (small amounts occasionally). some people keep there clawed frogs without a heater and some with, i keep mine with a heater at around 20-23 degrees. I would also strongly reccomend to keep them with a filter, you can buy a sponge filter which wont allow the little guys to get sucked in or loose body parts! When having a filter it will mean that you dont need to clean it out all the time as this causes stress to the frogs, it will also help keep nitrate and ammonia levels down as these can be fatal to the froggies. As to keeping them together they will be fine ,what size tank do you have?

Ive put some links here hope you find them helpful.

Also make sure you have a lid they can escape and the last thing you would want to find is a dryed up froggie

hope you enjoy the little guys

Hi!

Should I just cover the filter with some mesh as suggested on another website?

Also, it says to put plants in so they have places to hide, will they be ok with these? They won't get tangled up in these will they??

The tank does have a lid (as we had fish in before and a cat that lives in the same room so didn't want the cat to go fishing!) but I need to find some mesh to put over the top as there's a hole in the lid big enough for them to get out of.

I don't know what size tank it is lol! Which I really need to find out in order to use the dechlorinating solution!

If the tank is next to a radiator which is always on at some point during the day will it be ok without a heater?? Should I get a stick on temp guage just to make sure it's staying at a decent temp?

Thanks! I can't wait! I'm getting them next Friday when the tank's settled!

Putting mesh over the filter would be fine, as long as it is not a real powerful one as the dwarf species are very tiny so if they get sucked against the mesh or filter they may get stuck. As for a heater they dont need one i just keep mine with a few fish so they need the water temp a bit higher. i have been told that frogs like colder water! i would avoid keeping them near a window or radiator as the temp will constantly be changing.
