Default CB great crested newts?

ive just read a thread about native newts and that got me thinking, i have a large wildlife pond in my garden and it contains frogs, toads and a healthy population of smooth newts, as a child i used to (illegally, but i was 8 years old ) catch great crested newts (Triturus cristatus) and put them in the pond but never in such numbers that they became established,

becuase they are now so rare i'd like to buy some captive bred newts and breed them so that i can eventually introduce large numbers into my pond in the hope of establishing a healthy population,

anybody know where i can get some??

You're VERY unlikely to find captive bred specimens of native herps.

I spent ages looking for CB slow worms, and because of the regulations about selling the WC ones and the legal requirement that you HAVE to be able to prove without a doubt at any time that your animals were CB in order to sell them ... nobody bothers.

It would also be illegal to buy imported animals and release them in your pond, because the imports are not always of the same subspecies - and I'm sure I've read about the Italian locality crested newts taking over UK GCN populations.

It's a Catch 22....

protected species so none to breed from

nice idea but I think you'll struggle to find any.
