to be honest they are best housed alone as there is always the risk of one mistaking another's limb as food
i have 2 together and haven't had a problem

I believe so, years ago I had a pair and one died when he was 9 and I kept the other for two years alone before that one dieing too.
Any idea whether this was a fair lifespan?

I had 2 of them living together from babies until one died at around 8 years and the other around 10 years old. The longest living one didnt seam to even notice the other not there anymore to be honest .

They are probably happiest housed alone "MORE FOOD FOR ME!"
There is that limb munching problem aswell but you shouldn't have it if they are well fed.
