I have fire salamanders and they are great but might be a bit boring. During the day all mine lurk under logs, they are more active at night. They do come out when they see me and when bribed with a waxworm will climb onto my hand to get it. They don't really enjoy being handled but will tolerate it, you need to be careful about hygene cos thier skin contains toxins.
They are quite hardy and don't require specialist equipement to keep so make a good starter amphibian Maddie

If he likes the fire bellied toads then I would say to go with those. They are a lot more active, they live living in groups and are a lot less shy than salamanders. I have 2 tanks set up for these, they require a little more equipment but its not too expensive. I have mine in a 40/60 set up one 4ft tank with an island in the middle and a pool of water either side and a smaller 2 ft tank with land at one end (a small planter filled with plants and covered in moss), I use slate to form ramps down into the water. I have floating plants in the water, java moss and elodia. I use box filters run off an ordinary fish pump, toip up their water as it evaporates and do a partial water change once a fortnight when I clean the filter.......so quite low maintenance. You will find a lot of ideas for set ups on this site.... Caudata Culture Articles - Setups, glass dividers Maddie |

thanks for the link, thats a really good site, top info,i really like the last set up,he originally wanted fire bellied toads but the petshop tried to persuade us to buy this tiny round tub thing to keep them in and said they would be happy enough, but i hated the idea of putting them in something so small, theyve got nothing to do,i like the idea of your set ups sounds like youve put tons of thought into it,dont know if youve seen the toad keepers im talking about but they seem cruel to me,ill show him that site and i think thats what he would prefer to do,a nice naturalistic set up half land half water sounds perfect

I have seen those toad landings and think they are terrible, no space for the toads to have any fun and I find mine enjoy a greater depth of water than they provide. I use java moss so they can get out of the water if they wish or just hang from it.
Your son will probably enjoy making a more natural set up, my 2 teen daughters are always coming up with suggestions for our habitats.
