Default :( toad ate newt

Can anyone advise me...

someone gave us a fire bellied toad last night to look after and we were advised it can be kept with fire bellied newts..

so we set them all up and introduced them and the frog ate my boyfriends fire bellied newt...

is this common....

ive seen quite a few care sheets that advise fire bellied toads and newts can live together.... i dont want to set up a tank with both speices in if this is going to happen

I feel awful as the guy gave the toad to me and my boyfriend said hed look after it and the newt was his....

Did you actually see it eat the newt? thought they could be kept together. That must be one tiny newt or a huge toad. Any chance of pictures of their sizes? You sure it's not hiding or escaped?

FBTs and FBnewts shouldnt be kept together, for many reasons including that one. Make sure you watch the newt to make sure it doesnt get sick from the FBTs toxins, they are surprisingly toxic, another of the reasons you shouldnt mix species.

Its a real shame you've had to learn the hard way, and i know its only because of bad advice, ive spoken to you before for long enough to know you wouldnt risk it knowingly.

I honestly didnt risk it knowingly...

i did though feel under pressure to take the wee toad as the guy that sold me the exo terra viv it came in had nowhere else to put it... he really shouldnt have sold me the viv THEN told me it had a frog in it

I will get Scott to double triple chck all the tank but it seems weve lost the wee newt now...

Yea i know hunni, it must feel really crappy, but hopefully others will see this thread and it may put off some people from mixing so in a way maybe some good can come of it.

to be honest, the guy sounds more than a little dodgy, you dont sell an animals home whilst it;s still living it it!! Fingers crossed for the newty

I am sure you've been told all the reasons why they shouldn't be kept together now but i'll add this.

If either animal fits in either animals mouth then don't do it.

Amphibians generally will have a go at eating anything they can fit in their mouths.
