Exclamation HELP! Emergency with Xenopus

I've just bought an African Clawed from this pet shop because he's obviously ill and basically the pet shop owner doesn't seem to care....

Anyway, I've brought him home and have been watching him for over an hour now and could do with some advice...

He seems to be a bit bloated with a visible buldge on his left side. He has patches of red inflammation not just on his legs but on his back too. He's frantic and has obviously been swimming into things at top speed as he has two broken toes on one foot and one broken toe on the other. One of his arms is just hanging down and he doesn't seem to be able to use it for swimming so I'm guessing that that could be broken or dislocated or something too??

He seems to want to get out of the water and is producing a lot of spit from his mouth. I have never come across any of this with my own ACF so I'm really worried for the poor thing.

He doesn't seem to have much sense of balance either - he kind of floats lopsided like the left side (where this buldging lump is) of his body is weighted down...

I've called my vet who can't do anything until tomorrow and other vets don't seen to know what to do or suggest.

I've taken some pictures of him - I'm afraid they're not very clear due to the fact that I've just stood on my camera in my panic to get some help for this frog - but you can kind of make out the buldge on his side although the inflammation he seems to have isn't really visible.

Could this be bloating disease AND red leg?? It's just that he hasn't so much as bloated as aquired a lump on one side of his stomach...

He was being kept on his own in the shop but you could clearly tell from his behaviour and his dangling toes that he was in trouble...

I could just do with some advice on what I can do for him until my vet can take a look tomorrow - he's frantic and I'm worried about him getting more injuries....

Thanks guys - I'm past myself with worry!

You can see his "lump" better here...

And here...

Can you see how his arm is just hanging?? He doesn't seem to be able to really use it and it just hangs down like that all the time...

I'm not an expert but I do keep a Clawed and to me this just doesn't look like bloating disease because he has like a localised lump...

I know he's going to cost a fortune at the vets and some of you might go "Why pay for a sick frog like that?" but I couldn't leave him in a place where he's not going to be cared about...

Can I do anything to make the little fella comfortable?? Is there a way I can stop him from injuring himself further with his swimming into the sides of the tank? And does it sound like he has a good chance of recovery???

Im sorry but i cant help with offering advise on the frogs condition, never come across it myself, but wasnt sure if you are keeping it with your existing frog or not? if you are its reallly important that you set the new frog up in a separate tank and do a good water change to try and reduce the chances of your existing frog catching it too

good luck

Thanks...

I've got him in a separate tank to my existing frog so there's no chance of whatever it is he's got spreading to my other creatures...

Thanks again for the advice

Thanks Andrew but he's male - he has the black stripes up his arms and doesn't have the "tail" females have...

Until you can get him to the vets I would advise you to lower the depth of water he is in to roughly his height (length). Put plenty of weed in so he can just rest in the water, when ill they try to get out of the water. This will also stop him causing himself more damage and lower his stress levels. Also try to put his container in a quiet place with minimal light.

Unhappy

Thanks Madelene.
He's still with us today which I'm relieved about and he's slightly calmer. It also looks like his lump has gone down just a bit but he's still in a bad way...

Angry

Well, after being told by the vet that he'd had a stroke I was sent home with NOTHING for the poor thing... Despite the fact that I could see by that point that he had redleg...
Managed to get another vet to see him who said it wasn't redleg but he'd probably just banged himself
I was right and it WAS redleg... Although I tried to treat him he died about an hour ago so as you can imagine I'm upset, stressed and totally pissed... (excuse me).
Poor thing
