Its good for the animals to have a regular day/night cycle, i have a bulb on from 7am to 6pm (11hrs on, 13hrs off). The problem with using natural light, is just that windows tend to magnifiy the heat and so if you place them in a room with many windows, or in front of a window, during summer days they may get very hot and thats not good for them.
Whites dont NEED UV but I use the Arcadia compact 7% D3 bulb and it does them no harm, my plants thrive and they seem to like it too. You say you read the UV thread, well im not sure if thats one i mentioned it in, but after doing some reading of journals and reports i discovered that studies have shown that high levels of UV decreases the hatch rate of spawn, and may effect adult individuals also (not specificly WTF tests but amphibs in general- done to investigate climate change effects). Therefore I wouldnt recommend using a higher powered UV bulb like are available for diurnal species.
