Errr, yeah, you did!!

My adults bred last year and those are the ones I have left!! Not something I'd repeat too often or on the same scale!!

30 males to 2 females! Wow. Did you find it easy to raise the tadpoles? I was thinking of throwing in a female to calm the males down...think it will help?

I have 2, possibly 3, adult females - one of them has some sort of brain damage and so I don't know if its male or female, the vet thinks it possibly had a stroke. 'She' doesn't call or do 'cuddles' and so I think she probably is female.
I have 2 adult males and I'm gradually sexing the youngsters, as and when they give the game away, and separating them into same sex groups. The rest are gender unknowns but most probably they are all female as I haven't seen any more signs of amplexus in this lot! But you never know!!

The tadpoles were fairly easy to raise but hard work, non-stop cleaning and water changes! As toadlets, they are very messy!!

As I said in my PM, if you have room in the tank, I'd consider getting a female and maybe that will take the pressure off the one that's being bullied!

Good luck!

Thanks for your help. The place I got them said they cant be sexed...god knows why though it only took me 4 hours and I have never had one before! I will look into it. The tank is not large, but at 24x12 the tank should hold at least another one. I have created a few more cave shapes in and out of water and have allowed tunnels through the large rocks under water for easier escape...he seems to be a little happier with this, though when the bully discovered the new caves he tried to guard these as well as his little spot under the fern...but cant defend both and so they both always have a good place to sit. I checked them for injuries as you suggested and they both look okay. I is funny that the smaller of the two turned out to be the strongest though.

Perhaps the smaller one feels he has something to prove!!! Maybe it's STS (Small Toad Syndrome! lol) if he could get himself a Porsche he'd be whizzing around the tank in that!

Hopefully, your little DIY SOS revamp has helped to solve the problem for the time!

I think a lot of pet shops can't be arsed sexing amphibs and a lot of them don't know how to. One shop I bought 3 of the adults from told me they were difficult to sex so I asked if they minded me going through them and seeing if I could check them out. I was given the go ahead and spent ages checking and rechecking and (with more luck than judgement, I think) I ended up with 1 male and 2 females, so not bad going! Obviously it's easy if you see the males calling or in amplexus to sex them, shame the females don't do something equally as easy to spot!!

I only wanted the females to keep my brain damaged one company as I had to separate her from the other two males I had as they wouldn't leave her alone and she has trouble swimming at the best of times - she flips over and goes round in circles and, if it's possible for a toad to show emotion, she looks like she panics when this happens, so she has a very shallow water dish in her tank.

You made me laugh! (and that is not easy to do)

They do seem to have settled down a little...he is still cautious but in the open.

If it was not for quarantine I would have more...but as I said, at the moment I only have room for this tank. If it looks like they are going to fight forever more I may get a longer tank giving each more room, leaving me with this one for quarantine to add more...I have a 5 foot tank on my christmas list but I will have to be a very very good girl for santa to get me that it comes with its own stand so room should not be a problem...

I am currently researching cricket breeding (ug) they go through so many! Was thinking of critter keepers or stackable tubs. I have frogs that eat most stages of cricks so this would not be a bad idea.

Thanks again for your help...will need to get some pics up so you can see the tank, but everytime I try on here it says it has failed???

Have you seen the double aquarium stands? Not overly pretty but at least you can have two tanks in the floorspace of one.
I can only find this american website but one of our local aquarium shops used to sell them, not sure if they still do but I do remember buying one many years ago.
Double Aquarium Stands 20L/29 gallon - Compare Prices, Product Reviews, and Product Specs

Keep your eyes peeled on ads in the local paper for cheap second hand tanks. I was lucky in the summer, I went to a country pub and found a tank sitting on a wall asking to be rehomed for FREE!!! All it cost me was a new lid - bargain!!

I'm sure you'll be a VERY, VERY good girl between now and Christmas!!!
I looked into breeding crickets but haven't yet taken the plunge. I breed my own mealworms and waxworms, though.

With the possible exception of my African bullfrog, they are EASILY the most greedy frogs I've got. They'll eat till they look like little green orange and black pingpong balls, if you let them!

I'm pretty sure there's a lot more males on the market than females- that's why my 'typical' comment earlier. I deliberately bought four to even it up a bit, and even though they were immature, there was a fair range in size- but all four turned out to be 'cowboys' As I said, though, they don't seem to be actually harming each other- and add to that the 'feeding frenzy' when I tip crickets or woodlice in- anything that moves, including each other, is snapped at- again, with no harm done. It's quite entertaining, really.
