hey dude.. you need to get some land in there yes.
Im pretty sure its the circumstances and how they are housed which determines whether they will or will not er...whatever the word actually is.

thats wierd Gina, get some pics up quick coz it doesnt seem normal. lol. from what i know about axies, they are a form of the mexican salamander that is born without enough iodine in it to be able to completely metamorphose into the adult form. its a mutation that has stuck. if you can administer the exact right amount of iodine it is possible to make them metamorphose, but unless you've been trying to do thay it seems wierd that yours has done it. Are you sure you werent just sold a juvinile salamander?

It is possible for an axolotl to metamorphosise without the use of iodine if it has a genetic quirk that crops up now and again, but is not that common.
The 2 most common causes are iodine usage, or lowering water levels until metamorphosis is forced. Both of those often result in the death of the axy, unless it has a genetic quirk that will allow it to change. It doesn't just happen randomly though, it is triggered, and for most axoltls this trigger never occurs. If an axy changes before sexual maturity, it should be fine but will have a decreased lifespan to an aquatic axy and obviously you would need to change the tank to have a larger land area. If it changes after sexual maturity, it will have up to, but could be significantly less, than a year left to live. If they change after sexual maturity they usually stop eating and will starve to death, they lack the correct hormones to survive, have an appetite, or the correct metabolism. If yours has changed, I really hope that it is a young one, in which case you will need to change the care to that of a salamander. It is not a quick process, you will need a land/water 50/50 setup whilst the change is occuring which could take some months. Then, when fully changed, you would want a land setup. If you post pics it would help a lot to figure out what is going on. Has your axy been subjected to lowered water levels at any point which would account for the change?

interesting, i didnt know about the water level thing! I wonder if using a product like Tamodine could perhaps cause metamorphose?
oh and i think she only got it at Basildon so not very long ago, so fingers crossed its a little one! Gina, was the seller a well known breeder? just thinking maybe you've been sold a juvi salamander!?
