I have just re-homed 4 fire bellied toads from someone who could no longer keep them. They are around 3-4 years old.
What i would like to know is please, what size crickets should i be buying/feeding them if ordered online? I purchased some from a local pet store, and although they was the smallest they had, im worried they are to big. Also, how many hours a day should i have there light on for? Im sure as a beginner ill have plenty of more questions soon |

if you get mealies you can get smaller ones but the size up from pinheads is probably good

thanks, i will take a look!
I am still concerned on the light issue, how many hours a day should the hoodlight be on for? The previous owner said they put it on at 4pm when they got home from work, and turned it off when they went to bed. Is this enough? |

thats an odd time to have lights on for. at this time of year i'd say 10 hours light would be ok. put it on to suit you. i put mine on at 6.30am cause thats when i get up.

Thats why i asked
Many thanks! One other question, should the tank have no nooks and crannies for the crickets to hide? AND what fruit is good to feed crickets to bring them out of hiding |

i wouldnt worry to much about the crickets hiding, makes it harder for the toads to find them which gives them something to do. crickets will eat pretty much any fruit and veg (carrots are pretty good), up to you really. if you leave fruit in, youll get fruit flies which the toads will eat too, just make sure it doesn't go mouldy.

Hi.
I have Fire Bellied Toads, I keep them in quite a complex and natrural set up now I've had more experience with them but to start with I used to keep them in quite a simple set up. Depends on how much time and money you want to spend. They have light for around 12 hours a day, depending on the season, but most books and websites say that they don't require any additional UV and you should place them in a light room, keeping them at room temp. I personally have a Repti-sun 5.0 and a exo-terra sunglow bulb on them, keeping the temp at about 75oF during the day, it drops to around 60oF at night. I feed mine medium brown crickets, small hoppers, blood worm and the occassional meal worm and wax worm, I now also keep guppies in my tank and the eat the live young from them, when it come to feeding they like a variety. I bought a really good book for about £1 off ebay called 'Quick & Easy Fire-Bellied Toad Care' by Tom Mazorlig or these websites have lots of good information: www.pollywog.co.uk: Articles: Oriental Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina orientalis). fire bellied toad@Everything2.com If you want anymore info or to post any pics of set up etc just let me know...my BF says I'm the queen of toads ![]()
