In am sorry but I have been biting my tongue throughout the whole of this episode (this is Mason. Not Sami. please bear that in mind)

what you have is not really lucky at all, not for the axolotl.

Not only does it now have a significantly reduced lifespan (1-5 years instead of 20-30+) but the reason it's "rare" is because this change never happens in the wild and no one (well other than then odd laboratory and learning institute) forces an axy through this.

the only reason this has happened is because the setup was not correct and the water had not been cycled properly.

this axy has "morphed" because it was a choice of do that or be slowly poisoned to death by the water it was being kept in. The way people force axies to morph is by introducing significant amounts of some rather nasty chemicals (benzine etc) into the water they are living in. In order to morph this axy had to go through quite a bit (including it gills effectively being *burnt* off by some chemical presence or other in the water)

Basically this axy was forced to change because of the poor living conditions it was in and the content of the water you kept it in.

I also remember the first two thoughts you had when it happened (or at least what you said to Sami as it was happening). the first was that you no longer liked it and wanted rid and the second was you wondered if it was worth loads of money now it had morphed because they are "rare"

the only thing I personally would take from this is *NOT* to buy any more amphibians either land or tank based until you've got your husbandry and conditions spot on. Imagine the harm that could e done to any frog or similar species if you spray it with water and it still contains whatever crap was in there before.

I'm sorry but I don't like this being paraded round like it's something fantastic. and again i'm sorry for saying all this but for me the animals always come first rather than what people think of me etc so I will say this:

I am just glad we did not manage to find out a way of getting one of our axies to you when you were looking for one.

MASON
