Default Advice for Oriental Fire Bellied Bombinas

hey

Iv just bought 2 young bombina red bellied toads, now the guy in the shop said they would be fine in a smallish aquarium which i bought off them, but it doesnt have a heater in, does this matter???

when i got them they were in a tropical tank and he said it would be ok for me to put them in cold water aslong as it was at room temperature, the tank is at room temperature but one of them keeps trying to climb up the wall, they have land in the middle but he would rather go to the side nearest the lamp, has anyone else had this problem and will he calm down once he gets used to the colder water?

also could you tell me what their breeding habbits are, just noticed 1 of the frogs is on top of the other, and they are croaking/squeeking when they move, is this normal?

aswell as their eating habbits, do they eat whenever there is food, or only when they are hungry?

long thread i know, waiting for books to come from Amazon

thanks

hi congrats on new addition:
  • they dont need heat, just room temp water.
  • you can either have them in a land set-up with big water bowl or water set up with land areas or floating cork bark.
  • you need to use tap safe in the water otherwise the chlorine will built up
  • fire bellies always try to escape and love to climb so don't worry about them trying to climb the wall as long as it can't get out the top (they are excellent escapes)
  • they also hang off each other regardless of sex and always make noises (very cute)
  • as for food, i'd say feed them every few days, you dont want to leave to many crickets in tho as they will attack your toads.
hope this helps

they do need a varied diet, locust small are good, blood worms, wax worms, small mealworms ect. these sites should give you an idea of what you can get them and some caresheets too.

Room temperature is ok.
I keep mine (7) in an exo terra 45x45x45 with a large water container and feed them crickets, small locusts, earthworms and mealworms dusted with vitamins.
They are great little toads to keep.

Ever since I got them iv been struggling to keep them at room temperature of 20degrees onwards. Iv got a tank for them but its for tropical fish mostly, it a 6ocm x 30cm x 30cm tank, it comes with a hood where the light is attached to it and a heater which has to be submerged like in the use of tropical fish.

The question is with the light being inside the tank and above them, will it ecourage them to climb the walls to it? I obviously dont want them getting burnt!
Also would an underwater heater be ok for them? if not what heaters do you use?

Yet another question, i got them three days ago and on the first day I got frog 1 to eat a wax worm yet frog 2 didnt want one. Frog 2 is a lot more energetic and climbs alot when hes not swimming. Frog 1 however, sits in the same place for hours on end not moving, is this normal? Iv put more food in for them over the past few days, meal worms and wax worms, but now both of them wont eat, and frog 1 seems unnaturally calm and hasnt been in the water as far as im aware, does this seem normal?

sorry for the mass of reading and endless questions just I dont want to make them unhappy

thanks in advance

all animals have different personalities, some are more energetic then others. also they'll be settling in. your tank seems a nice size, but you need your heat to be a 22C/23C. not having a go at you but why did you buy them if you didnt research them first?

I actually went to the shop intending to buy cold water newts but the ones they had didnt appeal to me, the guy in the shop said the frogs could be kept in similar conditons so I took his word for it, thats why im trying to fnd out sooner rather than later how they like to live.

cheers for the info
