Default Gravel, Pebbles, sand or nothing?

Which would you keep newts on? I currently have my newts on a bare bottom tank with a few massive pebbles around for climbing etc as well as usual plants, hides and docks. I did have them on gravel when i first got them, but i thought littlefoot (fire belly newt) had ingested some gravel so removed it straight away. Now after listening to the arguments below i'm really stuck on what to keep them on.

This is what i've heard...which would you pick?

Pebbles - they can't be accidently eaten due to size but allow food/young newts to fall through the gaps making water dirty faster or insecure, adding extra toxins into the water.

Gravel - helps keep water clean but can be accidently ingested during feeding, which can be difficult or even fatal.

Sand - helps keep tank clean, can be accidently ingested during feeding but can be passed by the newt.

Nothing - bare bottom tank which offers little grip for newts walking. Looks bare too.

The tank is about 3.5 ft long.
