Default FBT info please

Hey guys, just wondering if you can tell me all I need to know if I was going to venture into the world of FBT's. I've no amphibian experience, and I know google can help me, but you guys can help me more!
What temps do they thrive in? How much space do they need?
Cheers in advance.

Or ill just write out what I did last time see if I get it spot on :P

:::FBT LIVING CONDITIONS::::

Housing

Always house them in groups, as there a "comunal (spelling?) toad" basically enjoy the company of other toads of there species FBT! around them.

Housing FBTS, I recommend getting several toads, I keep my 5 in a 45x45x45 Exo Terra ....

Airal view

Side view

Pond view

Front view

This is my previous setup recently removes all of the land stuff, and replaced with live plantation, and a few pices of twigs for them to sit on....

Currently 5 Toads....

Heating + Lighting

No special heating or lighting equipment requered, these toads can live happilly at room temperature, mine measures in at 16c and they have been fine like this for 2 months I've had them....

I also use a UV of 2% for brightening the tank although as far as im aware it's only a for viewing purposes they dont require the UV but mine is on anyway.

Setup

Provide 50.50 Land / water setup - as they spend the majority of there time in the water they will appreciate the space, my water section may not be 50/50 but the space is enough in my view for all 5 of them as each has there own spot.

The water must have the chlroine removed...
For the land, I used Eco earth soil - Zoo Med Eco Earth Expandable Substrate £2.87 - Pet Zoo Online Reptile Shop & Exotic Pet Store

Make sure you provide fake plants, as they like to hide, and plants for in the water, also some kind of rock if you go for the setup I done to help them get out of the water.
If using the original bowel in the terrarium for water if the water is to the rim of the bowel they will be fine for getting out....
I also added bits of log to add a more natural look to the terrarium plus they like to st / hang on these which is cute !

If your looking at adding real plants I think the following plants are ok if memory serves me right

Devils ivy

Vikus

Java fern (I think is water plant)!

Please remember to have some plants in the water as if they feel scared they can dive to the bottom of the water to hide amongst the plants.....

Feeding

Small locust, Small crickets, Earthworm, blood worm, waxworm, Mealworms (not all the time), flys, spiders, obviously with flys and spiders be aware they maybe carrying pestersides on them! so please be careful or avoid feeding spiders, I think you can by captive bred flys! not to sure!

Sexing....

Only way to really tell is, the males bark and the females dont, if a male hops on a male he will make a special croak rather amusing! if he hops on another toad and grasps chances are you have a female if the other toad on bottom does not bark at all!

Breeding

Not to hot on this either!

When replacing the water, replace it a few degrees cooler and this can set off breeding apparently! or if you have them on tempos lower the temps over periods of about 6 weeks!

Plus if you no your toads want to breed they usually bark... mine do this at 6AM lool there like good alarm clocks :P

Finished

Hope this helped.... if im wrong the more experienced will correct me im only a FBT owner for 2 months but have loved amphibians since Iwas like 8

I got alot of info from Rob here and I also read various threads on http://www.reptilerooms.com/forumview-41.html

As they have a section dedicated to FBT owners !

Also! - change water 1nce per week to rid any toxins your toad may have secreted in the water as it can kill eventually! I also use a little water filter cost me £9.99 which keeps my water clean

Ok cool, well I've got this spare viv here

It's 14 inches across (corner to opposite corner). Would this be suitable for a couple of FTB? as you can see I've got fake plants (I've got more than whats there) and some bark etc. So I just need a container for water and some suitable substrate.

Thanks for help guys.

Well I havent got a tape measure to measure out 14 inch but id imagine it would be fine to hold 2-4 ! and if using a container for water make sure they can get in an out...

Then again use eco soil substrate i listed above and kind of build the soil around the container and that should be fine good luck

I'll get a big deep waterbowl with a slope, probably use a rounded gravel type substrate (heard that was an option) with a layer of spagnum moss on top. sound good?

Yeah just make sure the gravel isnt small enough to be eaten can cause impaction

Moss is cool I used that but I had to much and it kinda made my setup look dull so I took most of it out! you dont need it to deep about 4-6 inches I think is enough
