Hi other threat got a bit scrambled up with people thinking i was just going to buy them and shove them in a box or somthing (atleased you guys care about the animals health/life)

anywho, what is a good substrate for dart frogs, so many, lots say bark, any particular brand?

What sort of plants are safe for the frogs?

i use a layer of leca followed by some weed matting and a mix of peat and bark on top i also have oak leaves wich will be a good source of shelter for your frogs depending on which speices you go for i would recommend that you seed the viv befor adding any frogs wich is adding some tropical springtails and woodlice as for plants bromelia species is a good start but you can use any indoor plant fom local garden centers as long as you check that they havent been chemicaly sprayed there is many ways to set up a dart frog viv and everyone has there own ways gaet a few metods 1st then decide howw to go bout it i dont know if you are on the dendroworld forum but i think you will get more help off there
good luck in keeping darts keep us updated.

Similar to Dendroman I use layers of hydroleca, weed matting, soil (i use peat and John Innes) and then orchid bark and leaves/moss on top of that.
As for plants I use epiphytic bromeliads mounted on coco panel at the back and on wood, peace lilies, orchids, pothos, inch plant, sficus pumilo, pider plants... Most of my plants are from Dartfrog - Everything for the Amphibian Keeper
You can use plants from garden centres but make sure to rinse the leaves well and rinse the soil from the rootball as pesticides on the plants will kill your frog.
Make sure your frogs have a small pool too - this can be artificial but in some of my vivs I use tropical seed pods (again available online). They can make good pools, hiding spaces and egg deposition sites.

This is my viv for my Dendrobatees azureus when I first put it together (it has grown in a lot since then - I will try and post an updated pic later):

Here is one of my D.azureus chilling in a bromeliad:

This is my viv for my group of Epipedobates Tricolor:

Have fun - I find constructing the vivs one of the most interesting bits!

Thanks Sean

They are great fun to construct... Dartfrog - Everything for the Amphibian Keeper have a great variety of plants for vivaria. I use them for most of my bromeliads and get the rest from garden centres.

High Quality Bromeliads, Tropical Plants, Naturalistic Vivariums, and Supplies also sell plants/bromeliads but I have never used them before.

Best of Luck
