Hi, I have visited a local pet shop, as my supply of crickets had been delayed, through no fault of the supplier.
I have nearly always had to comment politely on the condition of the animals.....water dragon with no mouth (they didn't know why, and still kept in a glass tank) Various reptiles, mammals, snakes some without water. A tank continuously with a bulb on the floor of the tank. (That has been rectified) Today, two tanks of rats had no water, I found an empty tank with water and hooked the bottle to the tank without externally. ( The rat was trying to get out of the hole in the glass tank where the bottle should have been) Once the bottle was back it went frantic at the water and eventually made a bed and was at ease. The other tank, because I would have had to invade the privacy of the owner, didn't open the tank, but went to the owner to ask if I could replace the bottle....she said no, she would do it LATER!!!!! NOW the point of all this is that they have frogs. I asked what they were and I was told Albino Frogs. I asked what were they and was told "just albino frogs" At home I looked them up, and they are Albino Clawed African Frogs....They are being "housed" in a tank with Silver Dollar fish, and a juvvenile Frog....a quarter of the adults size. They have no hiding places and no substrate, and I assume the top is open, as they usually only keep fish..."this is all so new"..."trust xxxxxxxx she likes to be different" (Quote the Dad) What on earth shoud I do? I know what I should do, but feel so bad. Am I wrong about the Frogs? They don't look happy, they are clawing at the tank walls. Thank you, Piles of smiles. Dobby. |

Hi there,
The african clawed frogs grow massive and will eat pretty much anything they can fit in their mouth, they are also notorious escape artists and when I kept them one managed to escape.....I searched everywhere and sadly ended up giving up hope (I honestly tried everything,,,,ripped my house apart, riped open furniture etc...). 3 weeks later I was comming down my stairs and glanced across at my cats water bowl and it was soaking in it... it must have been hiding somewhere and doing it regularly as it honestly would not have survived that long out of water, they are aquatic frogs.... I guess what I am trying to say is, if there is not a secure lid on the tanks they are being help in they WILL go awol.... They will also feed on any of the fish they can get in their mouth... as well as a smaller frog. Is the smaller frog that is in with them also albino and just a younger version of the larger one, or is it really small and a light brown speckled colour...if they are than they are probably african dwarf frogs which are a different species and stay tiny. I had 3 live very happily in a small filtered tank with a Beta (Fighting fish) for over 6 years and they lived very happily together. They will not last long with Clawed frogs which get huge.... Here is s link that should help a bit.... Its from frogland and has the care sheets etc... Clawed Frogs and Dwarf Frogs Selina

If you buy them now to "rescue" them, then the owner will get straight on the phone to her supplier and order more in - they will probably go straight into that tank to replace whatever you bought. As harsh as it sounds, the only way to stop animals being kept / sold in conditions like that is to remove the market for them, not to create one. |

The smaller frog is definately an albino clawed.
Phoned the pet shop this morning and the lady was not pleased. I was so careful not to sound like I was telling her her job. I said about the escape artist thing and she said she had lost some! When I mentioned the hidey hole she said people will provide that when they buy them.....but she didn't know what they were till I told her this morning! I hate going there because there is always something....they know nothing about animals....why buy a pet shop?????????????????????? Dobby |

If you can see their is cruelty, neglect etc.. then try to get some photo evidence etc.. and contact the licience depatment at the council and make a complaint.... Quote:
If you buy them.... you will see more in the shop next time you go in.... its business Im afraid. If they sell well, they will keep stocking them, and therefore you may have rescued the first ones but you are then making further ones be put in the same situation. I feel exactly like you in these situations, but surely you cant just keep buying more and more each time they get them in.... Quote:
However, they do grow huge, and especially if you are getting lots....you have to think of the cost of setting up and running a very large setup for them....
