A secure cage (funariums are ideal), food, bowl, water bottle, shavings and your mice. Probably cost less than £10 for all this (not including the mice). Try a ratio of 1:2 as a starter. As for the smell, as long as they are cleaned out regularly it aint that bad.

To stop the smell put 1 or 2 drops of vanilla essence in the water.
It helps with the smell.
But don't clean them for a few days when they have had baby's.

Gerry gerbil food, for about £2 for 2 mice will last about 6 weeks they dnt eat tht much they hide it round there cage so dnt be fooled by empty bowls.. one my mice was a mum for 1st time other day and had 11 babies.. but some times u get less n unless u wana have enuff cages n food ect i wldn say it was worth it spesh if u need bigger/ full grown mice..

It depends on how many snakes you have, what size mice you need for them and if you have the time for the mice also.We used to have about 8 cages set up-i'm not talking tiny faunariums,i mean proper Savic Rody type cages-and they used to take me about 2 hours a week to clean out and then there's every day maintenance, checking to make sure they're all still healthy, water levels, food etc.
If you have the time then yes i'd say its better and cheaper in the long run to breed your own, plus you then know how fresh they are and what they've eaten...its a healthy alternative, lol!
We now only have one snake and she eats very small mice and we still breed our own for her.We have one Savic Rody cage with 4 females in and 2 other cages each with a single male in-one acts as back up incase anything happens to the other,lol-and even with just the one snake its cheaper than buying for her.We don't breed the mice constantly just as and when we need more food for the snake (and we don't live feed) and it doesn't take up much time to clean all 3 out and check daily....obviously the more cages you have, the longer it takes and if you need larger mice that need growing on after weaning age you need more cages to grow them on in.
I would say the upkeep of what we have costs about £2.50 a month....i prefer to feed mine dog kibble as with the commercial mouse, gerbil type foods they tend to waste half cos half of what they put in the bags they don't eat cos they don't like it whereas dog kibble gets eaten,i toss in leftovers from our dinners etc and they all do just fine.
Hope that helps.

i`ve got mine in old faunariums, easier to tip into a black bag once a week and replace the bedding, i find they breed better as pairs,i fed on cheep rabbit mix or wild bird seed with a chunk of carrot once a week, and there is less waste. mine dont smell much tbh, but i keep mine in the coalhouse!
