Hi there everyone this is my first post
I am going to breed locusts and I really need some help as I have a lot of beardie's to feed, Just today I bought 100 small locusts (10-12mm) and I am going to put them in boxes something like this with mesh covering the top ![]() The ones I have are 45cm(L)35cm(W)25cm(D) The qestion is how long will I have to wait untill they are adults from this stage and how many of these containers would be required for them? Also would these containers be suitable? - as I have herd you need clear containers and mine are not even as clear as above^ From 100 locusts (not feeding any to herps) how many will I get if I am successful breeding the critters Any extra advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks ![]() |

Firstly you don't have to have clear containers . In labs they are often made of aluminium . You need to have good ventilation , if you feed enough greens you shouldn't need water and heat from a light bulb increases day length and therefore growing time . The temp and amount of food will determine speed of growth and the number of females to males will affect the breeding rate . Locusts need a deep substate for laying - something like moist sand . If this is in something similar to an empty coffee jar they can easily be swapped after each laying - preferably with a few available all the time . With up to 200 eggs at a time you can get quite a few and only around 15 days incubation time ( at 27 - 30 degrees ) - juvi's can be fed on the same diet as older ones . Really it's a case of finding a method that works for you and a little experimentation ( and a few losses - but don't be put off ! ) . See how it goes .
