hiya,
i just wanted abit of help really. my ex bought an african snail about 6 weeks ago, we broke up and he just left the snail at my house. i cleaned the snails tank out today and noticed that theres about ten white eggs in the tank, ive looked online and it says that snails can hatch eggs etc, the thing is the snails on its own and im just confused as to how it has layed eggs, isit possible for it to lay eggs because it is both male and female?
if anyone could help that would be great, coz if they are eggs that are going to hatch i will take care of them in the correct way!

Many thanks,
TW

I think they can retain sperm from past matings.

So there for, laying fertile eggs is possible.

they are heamaphrodites (sp?) but cant self fertalise. it has probably been in with other snails. with it only laying 10 eggs i would think it would be one of the less comon types of GALS, if you could post pics people will be able to help you identify what it is. also suprisingly snails are sociable animals and dont like living alone

The snail was in a tank with about 3 other snails so maybe thats how it got pregnant, i just thought it was weird that its only just layed the eggs! ive become quite fond of my snail but i dunno if i will be able to handle about ten other snails!
i will take some pictures of the eggs tommorow and post them, they remind me of tiny white chicken eggs, they look abit see through. isit possible to lay eggs after all this time?

Thanks for the replies!

if they are see through theres a change they are infertile, but im not sure if snails lay eggs even if they have not been fertalised, i have never heard of it before.
i would only hatch they eggs if they werent A.fulica as they are really hard to get rid of, and will probably only be used as food if they do get sold.
if it is one of the less common types of GAl, then they are worth hatching, as quite a few people will pay for the right snail.

how long have you had the snail?

the snail is an a. fulicia, i remember the guy saying when the snail was bought. well like i said my ex bought it, but when we broke he left it at my house, so ive had him for about....4/5 weeks now, hes a lovely pet though so i am going to keep him.
i had a look at the eggs again today, and yest where they were together ontop of the soil, now they are all spread out like the snails been moving them, i carefully picked one up today to have a look and its a perfect egg shape. its no longer see through anymore, just completely white. looks like a teeny chicken egg! when i look through the tank i can see loads scattered throughout the soil, is this normal? and what should i do exactly with the eggs! im confused and abit stressed! worried im going to have to look after 300 snails soon!
