I am going to be adding Royals to my 2008 Corn Run if anybody is interested. I am in the final throws of deciding which breeders I want to work with and obviously already have a reputable courier in place.

Cheers,
Patrick.

Well i can vouch for the others when they say that it is not an easy task to import snakes from USA.

I recently did this with another guy and the hidden costs are massive.

for example if you dont collect the snakes straight away after they clear customs the animal collection centre start charging you £180 a day to store them in a heated room, even if they are only there for an hour while you travel to the airport you get charged this.

It worked out for us that a shipment with a value of $1000 worked out at about £700 in costs, this included VAT, import duty and other costs. So for a shipment work $15k it will be a lot more.

So i would say that it is not really worth it unless you cant get the snakes in the UK or from europe (as in my case).

I emailed prehistoric pets as they ship regularly to the uk and got this as a repsonse

Max,

We export quite often. We have sold to numerous people in the UK and have an outstanding reputation there. All of the animals are cared for exactly the same prior to them being sold, and post sale. You will not be disappointed.

We have a number of ball pythons available on our site; just let me know what you’re interested in.

The way it works is that we do our paperwork on this end, then you get a scanned copy of the C.I.T.E.S. documents. You take those to your government to apply for an import permit, which takes about 3-4 weeks to review and be accepted. Once your documents are in order we book the flight and the C.I.T.E.S. documents are in the box upon arrival you take your import permit the airport where the box is inspected and the documents from us and you pass your shipment clears and you’re on your way home with your new snakes. It’s not all together very difficult and I’m willing to help with what I can.

Take care,
Jordan

I am currently awaiting a shipment of snake from prehistoric so i am finding this all very interesting and some of it news to me!!! I think prehistoric (and other big american breeders) whilst having very good animals and knowledge of shipping, are a bit ambiguous about the finer details and let you find out the hard way as i feel many wouldnt bother if they knew of everything involved! Having spoken to a major uk breeder who has previously had snakes from them (and this is not prehistorics fault merely the way our system works) he said that you not only pay vat on the value of your animals, you pay vat on the same amount of pounds as dollars i.e. $1000 you pay vat on £1000 !!! then theres various handling fees and the agent, i think this whole shipping thing is no where near as easy as the americans would prefer you to believe!

as long as you factor in the other costs, fees at this end then it's fine.

If you don't you're in for a nasty shock.
