I have shopped at Jap loi on and off for about 10 years. I agree with fangsy on a lot of things he's said. Some of the staff are good, some are ok but some are downright rude and arrogant! Dan is one of the worst imo, knowledgeable he may be but he looks down and talks down to people, he should understand that some people are more knowledgable than he is!! It's the customer that pays his wages!

I asked a few weeks ago if he was interested in about 30 or so convict cichlids for their stock, now I may have let him/them have them for free but when I asked would you be interested in them he looked at me in a snotty way and said "yeah if they're free" and in a sarcastic way, that was it, nothing more, nothing less, I just laughed at him and said you must be a comedian then left. Now if he'd said something like "yes we might be but we can't give you anything for them, I'm sorry but convict babies are very common" then I may well have said "yes I know, they breed like mice, when can I bring them in", because of his attitude he lost the owner money and I still have the convict cichlids lol.

About 2 years ago I was looking at getting a Royal Python which I did in the end but from a private breeder in Milton Keynes which was a CB one. Why didn't I get one from Jap Koi?.......It was a woman I spoke to at the time in Jap Koi, an oldish one, I had done my research on the net and in books long before going out to choose my snake, I asked her basic questions some of which she got right and some she got very wrong, when I corrected her she got all uptight with me, basically she didn't know what she was talking about, I've found this to be the case with other members of staff on and off over the years, mainly on the tropical fish section. There is only one guy on the TF section that I am happy dealing with as he is friendly, helpful and doesn't talk to you like you a novice that just walked in off the street!! No idea of his name but I heard him talking to Dan on a few weeks ago about some new carp fishing rods, so he knows who he is lol.

As for their prices, they do price match, even internet prices as long as the item is in stock at the competitor, which is handy if you don't want to wait for something in the post and save a small fortune. I bought an Eheim external filter about 5 months ago which was price matched, the average price on the net was £110, Jap Koi wanted £180 odd!!! they settled for £116. I know they have overheads but that's taking the mick! If they priced things more reasonably then they would sell a lot more than they do, I know people that would lighten the loads on their wallets much more freely if they weren't so damned expensive.

I must say that their tropical fish are of good quality, they don't snuff it after a couple of days like garden center fish do and the likes of Pets At Home, most are priced not too bad. It's the prices of their koi, reptiles and equipment that are craaaaaaaazy and unjustified.

Try to be more competitive Jap Koi, yes I know your there to make money, but if you lowered them then I'm sure you'd get a lot more business, however, the reputation of Jap Koi isn't second to none and never will be with arrogant staff and mental prices.

Rant over for now unless I think of something else lol. I'm off out now to visit Super Reps to get some crickets and have a general look. Will post my findings later maybe.

Righto, I just got back from http://www.superreps.co.uk/, I only live about 2 miles from them. I met the owners Chris and Beverley who were both very nice, professional and chatty (Chris was serving mostly). I bought a tub of medium crickets for £2 which is a bargain compared to Jap Koi plus I save about a fiver on fuel getting there! I did tell Chris or Bevs father in law to get his finger out with the website but he can't as he's waiting for feedback from Chris but they've been so busy since opening that's why the site is only 1 page at the moment. It will be finished soon no doubt.

The shop isn't big but it's big enough for what's being sold, they do have a good selection of reptiles and at realistic prices too. There was an adult male bearded dragon which was a right character, they got him out as a customer was thinking of getting a beardie so they let her handle one, and were giving her sound advice on the equpment needed etc, no pushy sales tactics or talking to her like she was an idiot because she was new to it all, I was impressed anyway.

I was going to take some pictures to post on here but it was quite busy, I may go back in on Tuesday which is my next day off and see if it's possible.

Having gone in there has made me think I need more pets lol. I'll get the wife to come round in the end lol.

Well worth a visit imo.

Good luck Chris and Beverley, I do hope you succeed, work hard and keep up the good work and I'm sure you will, I may even see if you need a new member of staff at some point lol.

I got my two cresties from Japenese koi and they were very helpfull and seemed very nice people.
the only problem i had was that they don't stock the crestie food - I've had to hunt around for that and now i've gotta order from the internet!
Other than that it was a great experience!
