How would you feel if someone posted a reptile you've wanted for a long time and have been holding out for. You post a reply saying you'll take it for the asking price of £200, you then receive a PM 20 minutes later saying he's been offered £250 and the money is currently being transferred to the relevant account.

This may not bother you but it would annoy me.

This is why I like to keep all communication in a thread until an agreement is made, from there it can be taken to PM.

If there are no real issues with the current system and the majority are happy, then stick with the current setup.
Didn't say i would, but members WILL if it's banned.

and if i had been searching for a reptile for a long time, whats an extra £50?

people will only pay what its worth any way, for example, if you ask'd offers on a normal corn, its not goign to go crazy is it?

Its THEIR reptile not mine just because i want it - they chose how to sell it and who to.

I have a list of people i will not sell to anyhow - so a higher offer would make no difference to me.

As i said before - if somone is willign to pay more for a reptile then it shows they don;t mind spending money on their pets and that they are unlikly to sell it on.

which must be a good thing

no i read it right, you said it was already going through.

It's not always the case that a better offer has won somthing.

I'm VERY picky to who my animals go too - so money is not a real differnece to me.

like i said it does however show somone really wants it

Sorry, but it wouldn't bother you if you missed out on buying something as someone else went to PM and paid £50 over the stated price?

EDIT: Just using the £50 as an example that's all.

As everyone's opinions differ this could go on and on just as it's personal preference.

i agree with this comment, just because someone is willing to pay more doesn't make them a better keeper of that animal plus i think communication should be kept on the thread and once a sale is agreed then it can move to pm whys all the secrecy needed if you have nothing to hide.
personally if i wanted a rep and said i would pay the asking price and then the seller came back to me and said he/she was offered more and would i pay the extra i would no just purely on principle and it would certainly put me off dealing with sellers like that again.
like i said if i am selling say a gecko for £50 and the first person to reply in my mind (has first chance at buying) says i haven't got £50 but can you do it for £40 and i know they are a kind caring person who would offer my rep a good home then i will say yes, if another buyer comes on and says i'll give you £50 then sorry no i have already agreed to the sale at £40 with the other buyer, i wouldn't dream of pm the other buyer and saying i've changed my mind cause i want the extra £10.

In my eyes it's first come, first chance, if the buyer who replies first puts in a silly offer and they are the type of person who i feel is just looking for a bargain and not that interested then i will refuse if i end up not selling at all as i have no other offers then so be it, i haven't lost anything and i would rather sell to a buyer who i was happy with and who i was confident to care for the animal properly than some person out to get a bargain or a buyer who i have seen in the past likes to multi swap as they get bored easily and want to try another reptile or animal for the month.

The funny thing is lol is i have had buyers wanting to make me silly offers on reps and expecting me to accept however these same buyers who then sell want top doller for their rep and will hold out regardless, which again proves to me that they are more interested in saving a few pounds when buying and making more money when selling andnd encouraging bidding wars and acepting higher offers on the side than the animal itself, i stay well away from people like that!

I just don't bother with those ads (offers) unless there's at least some indication of price; although, if I'd been looking for said species for a while then I might take a peek

True, I don't mind paying that little bit extra if it's something out of the norm, little bit special, waiting for ages, etc but not on run of the mill stuff.

But what if a new member/lurker came on the forum trying to buy something? You have no background knowledge of said person, would you sell to them? How would they have to prove that they are worthy to buy from you?

Or proves they have more money than sense...

worthy of buying from me?

No - i have a list of people i know who sell their rep's every few months - they don't get to buy from me.

As for unknown members - i would ask about background knowledge what they have, also check their old threads.

It's called being a resonsible seller - not making sure somone is Worthy

For me "offers" means make me an offer and I'll either accept or decline.
It doesn't mean "lets start the bidding."

Once a sale is agreed, if the seller then comes back and wants more money or is selling to someone else for more money then that is poor.
It has happened to me before and I now won't even think of buying from that person again.
But then this isn't what the thread is about is it? its about putting prices in the ads

Which is the annoying part as the rules say you have to list a price.
