Well I would usually expect that a viv be relatively clean before it's sold to me and I would always do my best to clean them before selling on...

But no matter how clean it is, I would still want to disinfect it thoroughly myself of course, just in case.

I did buy something in the way of a rack earlier this year that cost us almost £1k and it was filthy - caked poop and everything.. took us almost 4 hours to clean it. We were a bit suprised and taken aback, but it had already been paid for and delivered.

now you see thats really wrong christy..

suely if you spend that amount the least someone can do is provide you with a clean second hand item ready for you to further clean to your standards...

its not a lot to expect...

Umm, I dont think I would be put off from buying it, as has been said I would always give it a good scrub anyway.

Ive cleaned vivs and cages that Ive sold. Kind of embarassing if people come to collect and its full of you know what!

I don't mind dirt and dirty glass, dust, other stains of disuse... but poop is where the most bacteria is harboured and via poop many diseases and problems are spread, so I personally would always make there was no dried poop lying around in any of my vivs as soon as they are empty. It's just common sense hygiene practice really... not just for the person you might sell to, but for your own collection, even if they're not in the viv, some diseases can be spread in the dust of dried faeces, and can live quite a long time in there.

In all honesty i wouldn't even risk buying a second hand viv, i mean the the reptile that was in it may of died from something really serious and infectious like crypto and even if you clean it with top quality disinfectants , can you be really sure the product is strong enough and has done the job and all traces removed.
note:

PREVENTION AND CONTROL. Because all Cryptosporidium infections are initiated though ingestion of environmentally resistent oocysts, control of this stage is the single most important factor in limiting the spread of the disease. Infected animals and humans will continue to contaminate the environment, and elimination of these sources is virtually impossible. A variety of commercial disinfectants have been used in an attempt to kill sporozoites within oocysts. However, most of these have little or no effect on parasite infectivity even when C. parvum oocysts were exposed at intervals ranging from 30 min to 24 hr. At least some oocysts remain infective even after being exposed to 15,000 mW/sec UV light for 2 hr (but not 2.5 hr) (1993, J. Parasitol. 79: 67-70), -15 C for 24 hr (but not 1 wk) (1994, Appl. Environment. Microbiol. 60: 2732-2735), -20 C for 8 hr (but not 24 hr) (1994, Appl. Environment. Microbiol. 60: 2732-2735), and +59.7 C for 5 min (but not +60 C for 6 min) (1996, Appl. Environment. Microbiol. 62: 1431-1433). Typically, 100% of the encysted parasites are killed only when extreme and unpractical measures are employed. These include exposure to 1 J/sq cm pulsed light (1995, Food Technol. 49: 95-9, 100% bromomethane gas for 24 hr (1996, Appl. Environment. Microbiol. 62: 3908-3909), 28,000 mg/L chlorine for 24 hr (In, Cryptosporidium in Water Supplies, 1990, J. Badenoch ed., London), 10% formol saline for 18 hr (1982, Vet. Rec. 111: 414-415), 5% ammonia for 18 hr (1982, Vet. Rec. 111: 414-415), and 100% ethylene dioxide gas for 24 hr (1996, Appl. Environment. Microbiol. 62: 3908-3909). Lengthy exposures to gaseous or aqueous solutions of ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, high concentrations of chlorine and related compounds, and short term exposure to ozone, significantly reduce numbers of viable C. parvum oocysts but only rarely result in 100% efficacy.

And if someone was selling a viv with poop in it then they oviously didn't care anough about their reps to let it get in to such a state let alone leave it in there all dried and stuck on and then try to sell the viv like that, it's like when you see pics of peoples reptiles in vivs and they have placed a piece of kitchen roll under them to take the pic but at the sides of the pic you can see the glass viv and all the crud and mess in the seam of the glass, daily cleaning is essential not only for the heath of the reptile but for the health of us and a nice clean smelling home.

I have never sold a viv or tank ever or have i ever bought a second hand viv for my leos but have given away glass tanks for frogs and spiders for free but thats mainly to clear space and it's amazing how quick free things go lol, but even so they are free i still make sure they are nice and clean and i would never give anything away or sell anything like stats and mats unless it was in a condition i was happy to recieve it in myself.

Emptied out maybe, but I wouldn't expect it to be immaculate.
