as other people have said, i would rather clean a viv out myself and KNOW what chemicals are being used. not that i need to buy any second hand vivs now that the OH has started making them ( and doing a damn fine job of it!) but i would still clean a viv out before i sold it on or gave it away. wouldnt have anybody thinking i was dirty!

I very rarely bother buying 2nd hand and the ones I have, have been clean and I would expect any I did buy to be clean even though I would claen it again myself and use provent a mite just in case. Who would advertise dirty vivs? as it can say a lot about your standards of keeping.

If the viv advertised is dirty I wouldn't be interested in it. Then again I am very strict with my standards of keeping so would rather buy new.

We recently bought a second hand viv off here and were very suprised to find it still had sand in it. We could smell it on the way home and very nearly didn't use it.

I fully intended to give it a thorough clean anyway before using it- but I would have been alot happier with the purchase if it was at least clean when we picked it up.

If I was selling a viv, it would be spotless- but that is my high standards.

It only takes about 15 minutes to wipe over, hoover up any remaining substrate and polish the glass and i would always do this before selling a viv. When buying i probably wouldnt bother about it being dusty and glass needing cleaning because id do this anyway before using it but if theirs dried up pooh still left inside then unless it was cheap or i needed it in a emergency then i wouldnt take it.

it would put me off as i would think what other areas in thier setup are they lazy about, ie the cage could just as well have poo, skin, mites etc etc in it, so it would definately 100% change my mind

Personally I think yes. But at the end of the day if its described as needing a clean and you buy it then its your call.
I think I would have an issue if it was filthy and nothing had been mentioned in the post.

Well a couple of months back I bought a 3 stack viv from ebay. When i went to collect it from them it was filthy! Anyway got it home and then noticed their was a dead baby beardie in the bottom viv! Apparently she sold a whole lot off and said she must have missed one!!. So the poor thing died in the garage with no uv or heat or food/water??

I have bought 2 pennine vivs this year both from members of RFUK selling old ones and so far have had no problems they were both in great condition given that they are used and were cleaned out just fine. I have yet to come across a dirty viv but would imagine it is always a possibility.
