Exclamation Its that time of year...............

When straight out of the egg captive farmed royal pythons.

Only just had their first shed and just finished absorbing their egg sack. This is a message to all those considering purchasing one and a bit of advice,

Before making a purchase ask if the royal/s have had at least 5+ feeds,
Find out how old the royals are,
Find out what they are eating.

Please think before you take a "Bargain" Royal that a month or so down the line you could end up with a non-feeding royal nearly on deaths door.

in total agreement.

Royals were selling for £15 each last year, I ended up with dozens of emaciated desperate specimins.

some will be great feeders and make fab snakes, others will need expert keepers to get them going, so take the above advice and pay a little more for established babys .

I wholeheartedly agree.

you can drop lucky and get excellent feeders from the off but equally most/a lot of CF royals take a LOT of work and time, most need live feeding at some stage and some will be assist/force feeders for months.

If you lack expereicne with NEWLY HATCHED baby royals or turning the corner with non feeding royals (AS IN MORE THAN ONCE WITH ONE SNAKE!!) steer clear.

Just to add my little bit of personal experience...

Year before last I had 60 CF Royals to get feeding. I would say out of the sixty all but a handful ended up feeding unassisted on F/T rat pups. We did have say 15 at most that were assist fed and all but about 4 started feeding on their own. I think one ended up on live and the others after a handful of assist feeds starting taking overnight feeds. We didnt sell any though until they had at least 3 feeds by themselves (most cases 5-6 feeds).

As long as you know what your doing and have done your research (which we all should have right?! lol ) there is nothing wrong with buying CF hatchlings, from a good supplier anyway.

but you have just made the point andy.........you got yours FEEDING BERFORE you sold them, i have no problem at all with that, its the sites/shops/individuals that sell CFs with no food in them (yeh thats ok to experienced keepers) to people that really have no idea what they may be taking on. There are very few people that will sell captive bred snakes like that let alone farmed imports.

can you imagine the fuss that would be made if i sold my baby dragons at a couple of days old ? or corns straight from the egg ?

I know of corn breeders who sell their hatchlings straight from the egg to the trade

Its not the fact they are CF thats the problem its people selling snakes fresh from the egg. It wouldnt be so bad it the price reflected the fact you dont know if its feeding or not. I am sure that pet shops, in my area anyway, have a legal responsibility to sell you an animal that is feeding.

thats ok though, the trade know what they are buying

I just know that in a couple of months i will have tubs and tubs of sorry looking royals here, while they 'learn' how to feed., most of these will be imports.

i would not have a problem buying another cf as long as its taken some feeds on its own although i would be more inclined to go for a cb now ......

Ask Diablo i took 30 CF last year I was sold them in a bulk load for £300 off a member on this forum, was told they were strike feeders and everything, on arrival at my door i opened the polly box to find 2 dead already!!!! These had never had a feed, half of them were dry and struggling to get their first shed off! There poo was like water with bits of green in it!
I spent just over 3 months with these snakes i wormed them gave them a course of Anti-Flagellate and then put carnivore vitamin paste in every 2nd weeks feed. out of 30, 22 lived! i got all these strike feeding and sold them on, i made an overall loss on the whole thing but i wasnt bothered as i no they are all happy and got new homes.
