i found the money somehow for the vet a month ago, wasnt easy but did. i goto the supermarket just before they close and kept cheap veg etc..grow our own. and im on great terms with my local reptile shop, stuff at cost and even buy now pay a bit later.. i have had some amazing things off freecycle, and usually keep 1 or 2 spare of everything incase sudden new home needed here.. i would love to learn about tortoises and take in a rescue once i had researched and got a good setup, but to say a poor person shouldnt have animals is a bit extreme |

Grrrrrrr I wish people would understand that these creatures never come for free!!! Last month I rehomed a hermanns tort for a girl who was moving abroad. I travelled 3 hrs round trip in the car to collect her. She had a very good tort table, but it was all built on a pallet so not great for my house and not secure as I have 3 kids too. She did not have lighting or heating when i collected her either.
Day 1 cost just short of £100 for the basics (heat, light, limestone flour, nutrobal, hide, etc) After that probably the best part of another £100 for an outdoor enclosure, ( timber, tools etc, weed seeds). This week I rehomed a red tailed boa. She was free too, however I then paid £90 for a second hand wardrobe, approx £50 on heating and lighting, £60 on glass plus overall for both 'free animals' about 2 days work to get it all up and running. OK fair enough, you could argue that all these things could have been found more cheeply, and im sure they could have, it was my personal choice to try and make them look as good as I can and to have the animals in the best environment I can provide. The initial cost is worth it, but there are many long term considerations these so called 'free animals' also require and on top of that they are a lifetime commitment too!!! |

some people ( not all ) dont try as hard as others to ensure the animal has the best of care they take it in without thinking just cause its free...it does tend to tarnish all with the same brush but as i said in first post there are also the genuine people who do it through their love of the animals... no one is pointing fingers just tyring to explain why people get annoyed at others asking for freebies. especially when ive given dozens of reps to people in the past then seen them up for sale weeks/months later...

i know people who say yo shouldnt even have a dog if you are poor, i have had my dog for about 12 years, being disabled and unable to work, he was my old friend as girls kept coming and going, hes never left my side and infact many a time i wouldnt have been here without him...but now i have the greatest girl in the world who understands how i am and also great with animals too. it has come to a point where recently i hat to think, can i afford to take in more unwanted animals...and feel cheeky asking for donations from the people we get them from. |

http://www.julianhales.co.uk/07_july_ruegen.htm hes sooooo ugly! but smart, he can fetch my meds or baccy if i ask...and if i cant walk because of my back he will sit next to me.. i named him arthur after my granddad (no parents) and when my nan would make dinner and shout to my graddad 'arhur dinners ready' they both would run in! hes smart, funny and loving, but so ugly. hes the only pup i have had, always had old dogs, rather give them a short happy life at the end as they are overlooked. when my nan died, i would let granddad doggie sit over night, so to give him something to do...both totally inseperable, but now my granddad is in a home with Az and cant remember but by god he doesnt forget the dog..and the dog doesnt forget him either!!!! |

I rescue and re home quite a few exotic animals each year, however I do not charge a single penny. I find it rather disturbing when I see certain animals up for rehoming which carry a price tag in relation to the species of animal. Granted there are vet fees, feeding and day to day running costs to be covered but would this not best be done by donations generated by registering as a charity ?
To be fair I make an income from Exotics and the rescue side is my way of putting something back in to the Hobby so I can afford to operate with out charging (reselling?) any animals. I would dearly like to see some form of registration of rescues centres with in the UK. The above is in no way a Dig at anyone. I applaud all who have taken upon themselves to help Exotics in need and individuals prepared to go that bit further than most. Real Rescues need Real Funding.
