haha...good one!!! i want a house and all sorts of other things, dont we all, but you dont see me/us asking for them...certainly not seriously anyways...!
We (me and cooljules) also have a pot for loose change in case anything unexpected crops up like vet bills, or an unexpected animal being 'dumped' on us.

I always end up aquiring (sp) cheap or free animals. I'm on a low income and would rather take in an animal in that REALLY needs a home be it cheap or free, doesn't mean i couldn't pay vets or food bills tho. Just because someone can't pay out an enormous amount of cash for an animal or equipment dosen't always mean the animal would go into a bad home. Most of my equipment is 2nd hand, bought cheapest i can find or DIY (hides for example) but that doesn't mean they aren't looked after. And i hate when people tar everyone with the same brush(not saying that's happening here), i posted about this on another site where everyone was slagging off people on benefits/low income.

i would love to learn about tortoises and take in a rescue once i had researched and got a good setup, but to say a poor person shouldnt have animals is a bit extreme
Speaking from the other end of the stick, as a professional who often doesn't get paid! I would agree with the above statement. Looking at our bad debtors list, I would say more than 50% of these people are not what I would describe as REALLY poor. Sure they say they have no money, but are driving around in old bmw's etc and wearing newer clothes than I possess. Now I realise an old BMW doesn't cost a lot.......... but there are still plenty of cheaper cars!

I would say that people who are really poor usually don't get into these situations as they tend to put curbs on us vets to prevent us running the bill up! It's the ...............stuck for words I can use in an open forum......... people who don't care what the final bill is cos they have no ******** intention of paying it either way that bugs me - and I'm guessing they are the ones who want free pets. Grrr

I agree with gwinni & vetdebbie. I don't earn huge amounts of money but what I do earn goes on my wife, the kids & our animals. I would rather make sure that my animals are well looked after then walk around in the latest designer gear or a flashy car. We have a lot of rescue cases but I can assure you, NONE of them were free and the only one we did get for free cost us nearly £200 for the week we had her because the previous owners didn't have a clue what they were doing (and nor did their vet, by the way).

So I can assure you, we don't do rescues because they're cheap. Most of our equipment has either been customised by ourselves or bought for boot sales, house clearance, donations, etc but just because we don't have a huge amount of money, does that make us unsuitable for rescues?

I can tell you I had a HUGE row with the SSPCA last week as they told me we couldn't have anymore rescues, even though the setups we have here, even on our limited budget, is FAR BETTER than the conditions they are in our local rescue centre. And we are more knowledgable than most of the damn staff there!

I don't agree with advertising that you WANT a free animal, especially when it's something stupid, like wanting an albino Royal for free, because people form opinions just like they already have on here.

There are plenty of free or cheap animals out there that need good homes, you just need to know where to look for them.

the 'old' bmw i had, cost me 400quid..they go for nothing now with high milage and that car was great.

my vet other week charged me 30 quid, for telling them what they should do and they wanted to hear about all my animals..yeah they were not a herp vet (i was told they were) and half way through she thanked me for letting her get close to the reptiles...as not many people trusted her.

other day tried charging me nearly 6 quid for 7 PENCE worth of panacur

The vets here are the same there's one that has an intrest in reps and when i took loki to the vet she started going thro what i should have as a set up so inc a uv light told her i didn't as they don't NEED one, she never mentioned them needing moist hides so i told her and she said thanks for educating her about them. My local vets aren't a herp vet my closest is 3hrs away but i know if any of my animals needed vet care and couldn't afford the whole payment in one go they'd accept so much a week or whatever. I get offered animals i don't need to go looking it's great.

i must admit, on preloved and freecycle i have asked for cages for free... this is because i have no money, i have a vet fund set aside for my rats (i put in so much a week incase of emergancies-cages i dont see as an emergancy just something that would improve the animals life.) my college course is an expensive one and food costs quite a bit after a while, and all cages need to be kitted out, and id rather buy a run down cage and spend money doing it up than buy a really expensive cage and having no money to fill it.

i woukd never ask for an animal for free though, i do take in quite a few rats which people would just release if i didnt.

no animal is free, weather it be initial costs, equipment (cages/accessories/food) or vets bills.

Can't remember where I saw it but someone was asking for ferrets free, but then went on to say if you are not near me, delivery or courier at your cost!

But yes, too many people can't be bother to pay for things.
I di get 2 Corn snakes, full set up etc off my local Freecycle. Mt first thought wasn't oo they are free, it was s**t they are free, worry worry worry which idiot who wants a free snake would get them.
However the freecycler involved actually was vetting the emails and I had said she was fully welcome to view my reptiles etc and see if I would be a suitable home.

They are now happily settled here and my son has claimed them both. 'Takedown' and 'Burnout'.
Yes I have taken in Free animals, I don't actively go looking for them tho! If it is something I actually want and not a rescue (foster carer for Manchester Rodent Rescue) then I will make sure I save for it. I wanted a pair of Lady Amhurst's pheasants, I paid £50. I already had the set up built and mesh is expensive lol even if we sorce free wood (factories! recycle recycle save trees! lol)
