there are a few registered, fully licensed couriers around including ourselves, The Reptile Taxi. To courier animals with the intention of charging a fee to make profit you need to have the correct insurance and license, otherwise it is illegal. By far the safest way is to use a registered animal courier

Key word would be profit.

Now if some one was helping out as a favour and petrol money would that be ok?
Would you need a license and insurance?

Where do you get a licence?

What is the law?

if it were a favour i dont think you would need a license, else you would need one to transport your own. but dont quote me on that as im not sure.

The license is issued by DEFRA under the Welfare In Transit rules that fall under the Animal Welfare Act for legalities.

Here is the website including the forms that can be downloaded to apply for said license
Defra, UK - Animal health and welfare - Animal welfare - During transport - Publications and guidance

The license does NOT apply where
where the transport is not in connection with an economic activity;
transport to or from veterinary practices or clinics under veterinary advice; where the animal is an individual animal accompanied by its owner (or other responsible person) and is fit for journey; or
where the animal is an individual animal accompanied by its owner (or other responsible person) and is fit for journey; or
where animals are pet animals accompanied by their owner on a private journey.

The sale of an animal IS an economic activity however, and although you might not be being paid - if someone is making a profit, ie. the seller - it is surely still in connection with an economic activity. However, this has never been clarified and certainly no one has ever been prosecuted yet for transporting a reptile without a license. We have not yet ever been asked to produce ours even when leaving / entering the country with reptiles.
