I also agree with the length of time as im sure there are a few of us who only post when we need to. Maybe have the rfuk email address linked to the paypal account??

But then it doesnt mean to say if it IS with paypal your covered because me and a friend are in a dispute at the moment over a payment but for some reason the payment went through as a personal payment which i didnt authorise as, now paypal wont do anything even though we have all the emails to back up our case because it goes against their "policy".

Its just sickening that there are people out there who take advantage of us genuine reptile lovers and try to scam us for our hard earned cash. Theres no way we can completely wipe out these low lifes but id be happy to fill in extra personal details to cut it down.

I agree something needs to be setup i think when buying a small deposit is needed because there is alot of time wasters about but addresses need to be registered and maybe a credit card be registered with the forum as it has to be with ebay also i think a small fee is payed for each item sold to the forum for maintaining this so it will be a lot safer

One of the better ideas though fees for selling probally would be accepted. i thinke registering with proper addys and phone numbers would work though

As i said on another thread recently I mod on a forum where new members must be a member for 3 months AND have a 50+ post count to use the classifeds. Since introducing this about a year ago there have been no scams.

Do you think the 9% that said no are scammers?

3 months...50 posts? first of as been said bump bump nice snake bump... 50 posts i could make in a week or less...... 3 months well worth the wait if all ive to type is bump or nice snake 50 times to earn £100 or more..... details on profile lets get real..... do you know how much could be done with peoples details?

Pay £20 to advertise something worth £5 wont work.....

I'm sure the admin and mods do the best they can but they cant give out ip addys to anyone willynilly, im not sure if its illegal but its not ethical...but on side note even if they did.... do you know how many people use cloned crap?

Some of the ones scamed have bought of people who have just joined to sell stuff, be it xbox, wii, ps3 .... now lets think clearly.... its a reptile site but they joined to sell games consols? no alarm bells ringing? i think specsavers do hearing aids too...

I hate scammers but if u give u money away so easy to people who join reptile sites selling games consoles so easy... time to sell ur comp ...

I'm sorry if i sound so hard but a few ive saw scammed are trusting people who've just joined and not even selling reps.

I've been scammed before and its not nice in anyway... but theres many more legit ones on here than scammers and with the few exceptions theres very few threads stating ohhh look suchandsuch delivered my item so fast (ok theres itrader) but i hope u get my point.

If i over stepped the mark my apologies but post count and days on dont count for crap unless you trust the person.

I dare say one day i will get scammed again but all i can do is go on gut instinct..... I dont post much as im still learning about my snakes from what i read and doubt i will ever know enough but this site has taught me a lot and for that i thank all owners and staff and members.

I wouldn't dream of putting my details on a public forum, that's ludicrous

As i mentioned earlier id be happy to fill in extra details, but obviously this would not available for any user who can then see and clone all my details.

This would be for the mods incase a transaction turns out to be a scam, you report it to the mods who can then track down their details once its been disputed.

I dont think there is a perfect solution but maybe go with so many posts and be a memeber for a certain amount of time for now as Caz said it worked on another forum, plus im sure this would be easiest for the mods to carry out.

i havent read everyones thoughts.,...but to be honest, i agree but then i think, well if thye are prepared to scam your money, they are prepared to wait, nothing to stop them from signing up in various accounts and then slowly scamming 1 by 1 ?

I remember someone here who did ALOT of people out of various spiders, massive uproar about it. I cant remember the name, was about 2 months ago, apparently she was on here for years, had 1000's of posts, had traded fine with alot of people and she had 100% itrader. then she scammed aload of people, selling them all the same spider, then she never returned to forum, just goes to show that time doesnt matter really >.<'

I think they should do something like a full clarification before your allowed to post to sell/buy in the classifieds, full contact details etc. Then they've got something to fall back on and something for the police to use should it go that far.

You're seriously suggesting that you want people to make their details available on a public forum? Apart from the implications to personal security, do you really think anyone with a collection of, potentially, valuable herps is going to want to give their exact location? I think that might well lead to a rise in stolen-to-order animals.

and we have people that can ask you for proof
mabey ring your number or send you a letter witch you have to repley to in a 5-10 days
OK, so how will this operate in practical terms? How will the staff needed to run the system (and it will need staff: volunteer mods simply won't have the time to do it) be funded? Do you envisage a system where details are checked everytime someone wants to sell something? If not, how can you gaurantee that the verifed address etc is still valid?

and mabey some sort of awards that can be shown next to your name for being a top seller, 10 good feedback, 20 good feedback, most help full ect ect
But that wouldn't eliminate the problem if someone sells, say, twenty cheap items with no problem, then makes a killing by scamming on the expensive twenty first item (or more, if ads are placed similtaneously). Potentially, it could even make things worse as it could lull potential buyers into a false sense of security.

or mabey you can only buy intill you have 10 good feedback
Problem is that, feedback doesn't always get left. I've bought animals in eleven separate transactions on this site: in each case, the purchase has always gone smoothly and has been entirely amicable. However, feedback has only been left for me three times (and twice by the same seller!), even though I've always made a point of leaving feedback for the seller (I suspect that this happens quite a bit: let's face it, people are always more wary of sellers, as they stand to lose money if they're untrustworthy, so there's a greater emphasis on encouraging feedback for them, whereas the worst a buyer can do is waste your time). Unless the feedback system is made compulsory, there could be decent members who may never get the opportunity to sell stuff. And if it is made complusory: who gets the job of monitoring the classifieds to check who's buying what off of whom? And that both parties have left feedback?

lol my idears are probly crap lol but i am up for helping in anyway i can
luke
Please don't get me wrong: I'm not dissing your suggestions for the sake of it and completely agree that something does need to be done about the minority of 'members' whose intention is solely to scam. The problem is it's extremely difficult to come up with a solution. A determined scammer will find a way round most of the measures that are put in place to protect people from them and attempts at preventing scams are often both costly and time consuming, often prohibitively so for a public forum such as this. If someone wants to rip people off badly enough, they'll find a way to do it (even if that means making inane posts or biding their time a while).
