Excellent resource featured

Comments Like most of the AVS series this is a good value book packed with accurate information & loads of colour photographs. It's over 100 pages long and includes:

- General Information
- Before you Buy
- Selecting a Boa
- Housing
- Heating & Lighting
- Feeding
- Maintenance
- Breeding Columbian Boa Constrictors
- Diseases & Disorders

Each section covers everything you need to know to keep a boa as a pet, it also has quite a good section on breeding if you were thinking of trying that. What it doesn't include is that much information on boa localities, morphs or the genetics of breeding (although it does have some very nice locality pictures), but it does tell you everything you need to know in regards to husbandry and health, applicable to BCI, BCC, or most boa localities and is possibly one of the most in depth resources for care in captivity.

I particularly like the "troubleshooting" health guide which is a handy resource for quickly identifying possibly problems and treatments or in helping to realise a snake needs veterinary treatment. Of course we all hope our snakes will never get ill but if they do, it helps a lot to know what to look for.

There is a small section on "the law" which does not apply to the UK, as this is a USA published book, so don't panic if it talks about checking for "licenses" etc - this only applies to some states in the USA and is not applicable to the UK.

Overall definitely worth a read, and a valuable resource to anyone who keeps boa constrictor imperator.

Liked about it - Fully comprehensive guide
- Excellent health section including troubleshooting chart
- Good value for money

Didn't like - Not much information on localities, morphs or genetics.

Good, informative read!

Comments Purchased this book to get some background on Boa Constrictors and was very impressed. For the size of the book it covers many areas of boa husbandry and keeping. This book also introduced me to the threat of IBD in boas and gave me a good grounding for doing further research on this. The book also goes through the considerations someone needs to make before they purchase a snake that can get to the size of a full grown BCI. Notes on common species was informative for the size and while this could possibly have been larger, was informative enough for someone getting into snakes.

Liked about it Informative, well laid out, easy to read (I feel this book would appeal to all ages and would be especially suitable for the younger herper as topics are dealt with in manageable sized chapters) good disease information section (helpfull for someone just starting out), Health troubleshooting chart in the back of the book is an extremely usefull point (especially for the books size)

Didn't like Not much information on morphs, but their care is the same so not a big issue. Would have liked a larger maintenance section.

Great value book

Comments Low cost book which has a great amount of detail in it, covering everything from breeding to diseases. You can't go wrong with this book like many other AVS books, very easy to read and understand. Has many colourful photographs in it to give a clear view on the vast range of Boas.
Although this book does not go into as much detail as The Complete Boa Constrictor book, i would still recommend reading it because the information in this book is great, with a special health troubleshooting chart which is so easy to use.

Liked about it Very simple to use, with good detail
Not very expensive to buy
Its an AVS title so you know that your getting good information

Didn't like Very good book and would recoomend to anyone , but its not as good as The Complete Boa Constrictor book

an alround good husbandry book

Comments I bought this book at the same time as the complete boa constrictor, back when I thought I may like to own one as a pet. I bought it alongside the other as a basic huisbandry book and I found it to be an informative interesting read with way more detail than I was expecting. It was well laid out and easy to read.

Liked about it I thought that the housing chapter in particular was very good. I thought the photography was briliant. And I also thought that the chapter on health was well written and easy to understand.

Didn't like I didn't really dislike anything about this book but felt that it was perhaps a little vague on growth rates, but as growth rates can depend on so many variables maybe they were just erring on the side of caution!

Another overall hit from AVS

Comments Very good value for money and a must for any BCI keeper. Husbandry and breeding techniques are the emphasis rather than locality type profiles. These profiles are however included but they are very brief, reflecting the similarities of care.

Liked about it Like all AVS titles I have read this did not disappoint! Some very cool certified photographs of localities and more fittingly 'morphs' make this a very worthwhile read. The author has clearly gone to a lot of effort to include all aspects of BCI care. Something often omitted by others. Some great information is included in the morph and locality type sections, something that needs to be updated in the former case but is valuable nonetheless.

Didn't like The locality section was brief. The book could do with a revision in light of recent advances in the 'morph' market and general husbandry practices.
