Hot and Cheap - Halogen Spot Bulb
Installation and Operation
The Sylvania Hi-Spot is a fantastic heat bulb and is no more difficult to fit than an ordinary screw fit bulb. These bulbs can be used on dimming thermostats too so they are practical for reptile use.

Performance vs. Expectations
The Sylvania Hi-Spot bulbs that I use outperform regular spot bulbs dramatically. The halogen in the bulbs prolongs the life of the bulb so that each bulb lasts for an average of 3000 hours of continuous use rather than the 1000 hours for a regular reflector bulb.
The Hi-Spot bulbs are also more tightly angled than spot bulbs, they are available in 10 and 25 degree forms. The tighter the angle the more focused the beam so it is easily possible to have a basking spot of 50+c yet maintain a cool end of 24c in your vivarium.
The 75w version of this bulb is the equivalent to at least a 100w regular reflector bulb in terms of light and I would say heat output is similar to that of a 150w regular reflector bulb.

Value for money
With the Sylvania Hi-Spot bulb not being reptile branded it is great value for money. These bulbs are available for around £4 (compared with £10+ for reptile branded bulbs) and they will easily last a year or more and a regular day/night cycle. The money saved by using a halogen bulb instead of a regular reflector will be apparent in electricity bulbs as these use less electricity to maintain the same heat output.

Didn't like
The only fault I can find with these bulbs is the fact they emit light. If they didn't they would be the perfect heating solution 24 hours a day.
