New Guinea Spiny Stick Insect

Ouch!

This is a loverly species but wouldn't recommend for a first time keeper, they eat a lot so poo a lot so need regular cleaning. This is a large species with lots of very sharp and painful spikes, it also has hooks on it's feet, if it is on your naked skin it can be quite painful to remove. If you put this species is cramped (in a too small set-up) with other insects it will result in cannibalism! This is a very hardy species and can be kept at room temp without the need of extra heat. This species can lay it's ova on top of substrate but they usally bury their ova. This is a common species and is best kept in a large set-up in a large group in my opinion but can be kept in small set-up in a lot small groups. Males will fight, I did a 1 male to evey 5 female ratio as males are very aggressive and I wouldn't handle one unless experienced!

Not a beginner's species
| Comments |
You're wondering how a stick insect could possibly be classed as a 'not for beginners' species... well, sure, it's easy to feed (bramble), it grows dead quickly, it's easy to sex and breeds readily and it also comes in a nice variety of colours (changes through the instars)... but it also has a whopping great big spine on their rear legs. The warning comes here as these legs are really quite strong (think nut cracker - WITH A SPIKE). Maybe I'm being a bit of a baby with these but if you get pinched, it hurts!
A fun species though that again breeds readily and grows to a decent 'holdable' size (6 inches)
