Easy to use, worth the money with proper care.
| Comments |
Meal worms are easy to use as a food item, just give them some veg and water and they last a while too!
One problem many people seem to face is that their mealworms when bought as the larger size, quite often pupate and turn into beetles (and if you are unlucky like I am with my leos...they show no interest in them when they become beetles! lol)
I find the simple solution to this is to keep the meal worms in the fridge...obviously not too cold. As this slows down their growth rate and stops them from maturing too quickly.

Easy to handle and worth the money!

These meal worms are ideal to use, clean in my opinion. dont escape like crickets and are so easy to handle.
Definatley value for money even when you purchase online buying in bulk works out to be a cheaper option.
Meal worms last a long time if you feed them.(gut load)

Cheap, easy to care for!
| Comments |
Mealworms are really easy to care for; simply just shove in a little peice of carrot, oats or scrap food and you're ready to go! They are cheap and can be used to feed most lizards, amphibians ect. Personally, I use them for my African Pygmy Hedgehog, Bramble- and he absaloutely adores them! I am very squeamish when it comes to insects and crawly things, but because mealies are slow moving I don't have any problems. You can also buy freeze dried mealworms from most good reptile stores, which are allready dead. Mealworms are excellent for fattening up problem feeders and they last for ages too! They are a healthier alternitive to waxworms and they provide a good source of fat and add a little bit of variety into your reptiles life too. Definitely reccomended!

I like the fact that they are very cheap and easily sourced. It's good that they last so long to- and they're not really fast aswell, so you don't have to worry about them getting away from your reptile (aslong as you have them in a mealie dish)!
|
| Didn't like |
I personally havent experienced them changing into beetles but it's always something that kind of worries me, but as long as you use them up within a few months then I'm sure there won't be a problem.

Worth the money - recommend to all
| Comments |
Good value for money - recommend all the way for Bearded dragons - chameleons - uromastysx - water dragons - leopard geckos etc etc. Just ensure you give your reptile a varied diet not just these on there own. And read a good care sheet and dont beleive myths about eatting there way out of reptiles stomach - not true!
Recommend 100%

1- Reduce smell compared to other live food
2- Most reptiles eat them
3- Easy to feed to reptiles - (A some live food is hard to handle-unless your a MAN!)

Liked it - would always add extra bran to them and also gut load them with the same diet as the bearded dragons. We also dust ours too, for extra nutishment! But feed them to the reptile quick as they do turn into beetles lol.

really brill
| Comments |
i dont know what i'd do without mealies, i use them all the time. i use them as a main diet for my adult breader leos and have never had a problem. i also give them to my plated lizards occasionally as well as giving them to most of my inverts too.
some people say that you shouldnt feed them as a staple diet for anything because they're supposedly hard to digest, but i'm going to be honest, i have always used them as a "staple" diet for my adult breeder leos and i have never had a problem, so i always recomend them.

Always have these in your reptile room!
| Comments |
Despite the occasional bad press mealworms have been subjected to recently, they still remain a very reliable and easy food source. I'm a particular fan of mealworms for albino leopard geckos with bad aim as they don't have the speed to avoid being eaten.
Mealies are superb value for money, especially when purchased in bulk.
|
| Liked about it |
They are easy to get hold of, almost all decent pet shops sell them.
They last for ages and travel well so you're unlikely to have issues if you order online, even in poor weather.
They are extremely easy to gut load and so make a nutritious meal for your herp
Gut-load with a variety of veg, oats, fish flakes etc. Don't throw in too much wet food in one go as it can make them sweat...
|
| Didn't like |
Don't forget to gut-load and dust your mealworms because on their own they're a bit lean on the nutrition front and so wont be as good for your pet.
I'd suggest only feeding mealworms to young animal at the peak of the day when they are most active and their metabolism is running at it's highest. This will make it easier for them to digest the mealworms' hard, chitinous exoskeleton.
If fed exclusively, mealies are pretty fattening and as I'm a great believer in a varied diet I'd suggest using them in conjunction with crickets, locusts and other livefoods.

Good addation to a varied diet!
| Comments |
Mealworms are the ultimate bang for your buck feeder. Although I wouldn't use them as the main diet for any of my herps I do think they are great to add into the diet. They key to a healthy herp is a varied diet, and mealworms are certainly part of that. Cheap as dirt too, only about $2 for 200 at any petshop and less if you buy from a local breeder. I can get about 1000 for $5 which is great!
|
| Liked about it |
-Keeps forever in the fridge or in a bucket of oats, Lasts much longer then other feeders.
-Readily accepted by most animals, especially trouble feeders. Also a healthier alternative to wax worms for fattening up a thin animal, less addictive too.
-Nice and slow moving, unlike crickets who can be hard for some animals to catch.
|
| Didn't like |
-There frass (Poo) can cause allergy flair ups. It can really be a problem for those who are allergic to grains. If you're not allergic to grains you probably wont have an issue.
-Higher in fat then crickets, so I wouldnt feed too many, also a debate is out on the gut loading potential with these guys.
-Hard chitin can be harder to digest and Calcium and vits don't stick as well. Isnt usually a problem though.

Worth the money
| Comments |
A great 'product' a good way to supplement a reptiles/iverts diet. Can be kept for months, just throw in some porrige oats and bananna skins for them to feed on (the larva eat anything even paper or plastic bags(not reccomended)). When they turn into beetles (or 'aliens') move them to a seperate tub for egg laying. Beware though, growing on the mealworms is a slow process!
They are readily available, inexpensive and long lasting which means there is no excuse for not having any as a 'stand by' food.

Easy to keep and breed.
Lasts for a long time in the laval stage.
Not that smelly or unpleasent to deal with.
They become 'dormant' during colder periods.
|
| Didn't like |
Reletivly high in fats.
Chitin can be hard to break down if too many are fed
They can be hard to find if they escape into the reptiles / inverts enclosure

Great quality
| Comments |
Great value for money product as they can last for months if left in good conditions. Most geckos and lizards love them as a treat but they should not be the only food source.
|
| Liked about it |
They last a very long time so can be gutloaded for a lot of extra nutrients.
A great treat for leopard geckos, they can be spread around the vivarium and geckos will find them overnight.
Great value for money as you get so many in a pack.
|
| Didn't like |
Can be a pain if you accidently leave them somewhere too warm as they will all turn to beetles.
Annoying to get out of the box because of the bran feed they come in.
They need a secure bowl or dish to be contained in when being fed to reptiles which are housed on sand, as they will dig themselves under and become very difficult to find.

Brillant little worms
| Comments |
great little thing love these little worms there so good at fattening a leo up and last ages which means you spend less money which means that you can spend money on other thing in your reptiles cage .Also dont listen to people who say they can crawl out of a geckos stomach or a beardies cause theyre talking rubbish also the "rumour" that theyre exoskeleton is harder to break down this is also complete rubbish .

Easy to breed , can be left all day/night and not worried about your reptile getting bitten by them , last ages and easy to keep ie just put them in porridge oats and throw in a potato or carrot and change it every other day .:D

Very good quality
| Comments |
Mealworms are very good value for money, I usually pay £2 for an average sized box & they will last me a good few months. I have also kept mine in the tub, for 4 months & they turned into beetles. (I had forgotten about them!)
Easy to keep, just feed greens, small cricket pellets & bug gel.
I tend to only give my Yemen the ones who have just shed, usually a very pale yellow/white & he adores them.
I have heard a lot of people say that they can eat their way out of a reptile's stomach, for this reason I squish the mealie's head before giving it to him.

- Very easy to get a hold of, cheap.
- Easy to maintain
- Easy to gutload

- They can become slightly smelly if you just leave them in the cricket tubs

-Mealworms are really cheep and are extreamely easy to breed.
-They are actually NOT worms, they are infact darkling beetle larve.
-Mealworms make brilliant food for your reptiles but they should not get too many as there hard shell can make it difficult to digest, it is also recommend that you cut off/ crush the head of the mealworms as some people think they will eat there way out of the reptile/amphibians body.
- I breed mealworms myself so if you have and questions just ask.

Easily cultured, easily supplemented. An excellent feeder species.
| Comments |
Mealworms represent a feeder species that has some real positives. They are very easy to gut-load and supplement. They can be restricted to a bowl, which makes feeding relatively problem free, and perhaps most importantly, they are very easy to culture.
There is, in general, a lot of bad press regarding Mealworms. Most of this is totally unwarranted, as many recent scientific sources will testify. With concern about these horror stories alleviated, this species has to be considered in a positive light, when weighing up its benefits.
In comparison to other live food species, they are relatively cheap, and represent good value for money.

| Liked about it |
1) Very easy to gut-load and supplement.
2) Very easy to maintain and culture.
3) You can restrict them to a feeding bowl.
|
| Didn't like |
1) One small word of waring, this species, like all insect larvae, are relatively high in fat. You should be aware of this when compiling your feeding regime, based on your individual animals requirements.

Easy to take care of

All you need to take care of them is some bran and veggies and they'll start breeding in no time however their hard chitin shell and their not so good nutritional value means that it cant be used as a staple for many reptiles as it can get them fat and impacted.

Simple food source for many lizards!
| Comments |
Readily available and easy to get hold of at good cost. Always get plenty in a box and seem to be better value than any other livefood. Easy to gut load with veg. They get their water source from this too. Nearly all lizards eat these as either a staple or occasional food. They keep for a fair while and overall good and competitive.

PERFECT live food
| Comments |
Meal worms are an ideal live food. They lasy along time if bought as babys, and as said they have a very low success rate of escaping unlike crickets, locust ect. They are cheap and if gut loaded they are a good healthy meal for most lizards geckos, bearded dragons ect. Alos their are some very good online deals with meal worms. Another great thing about them is that their alot easyer to digest that wax worms. But i have to say they shouldnt be your lizards only type of live food, as they need crickets, meal worms and idealy a few locusts to vary their diet.
