I agree you made the right choice. I rehomed a staffy bitch last year, also FTGH off a rescue site as she was going to be put in kennels due to the owners being kicked out of thier home.

She showed a lot of nervous aggression towards my children and I genuinely feel a nervous dog is just as dangerous as an angry dog so made the choice to find her a new home. Nobody rescue wise would take her because I was honest enough to say she was growling and such like BUT always with ehr tail between her legs.

In the end, Ditta offered to travel down to run me to the kennels with her as I don't drive and can't get the bus with a nervy dog!

I would have been very suspicious of the "free" part and now you know why. However in the future please make plans to have the whole family interact with the dog/s this includes other dogs and kids before taking it home/buying to avoid this in the future. Thats with any dog not just the big powerful types. They do this in rehoming centres for a reason.
