Hi Nat, please keep her until she is at least 8 weeks. I really don't think kittens, or pups for that matter, should be taken away from their mothers before that. Their mothers need to teach them to be cats and if they are taken away too young, they become too humanised at their expense.

When we admit kittens at our sanctuary that have been taken away from mum to early they get so stressed that they will literally scream and shake when left alone. They go off their food and refuse to interact with other kittens all they want is to carried round 24/7.It takes ages to get them to readjust to being a cat again. Kittens that come in that have been homed at 8 weeks + adjust really well and interact with other kittens

Hi Nat, that's excellent thanks.

I hope you don't think I was having a go at you cos I wasn't. It's just that Pedigree cat breeders aren't allowed to sell their kittens until they are fully vaccinated, which means we keep ours until they are a minimum of 13 weeks old.

I could tell with my females that they weren't ready to give up their kittens at 6, 7 or even at 8 weeks, whereas by the time the kittens were 13/14 weeks old the mothers hardly seemed to notice they'd gone!

Even if kittens are weaned and appear independent at 6 weeks, it's definitely too young and most queens aren't ready to lose them that early.

Why do you have to be so far away? I have been desperately looking for a female kitten for a while but just cannot find any local to me. Well Good luck in finding her a new home

Don't know if it'll help, but now is the time to look for non-pedigree kittens. Non-pedigree females don't have seasons in the winter, so you would have had problems finding a kitten before now.

By the time they start having seasons in the spring and then have a 2 month pregnancy, kittens will be arriving any time from now, so now is the time to start seriously looking.

Hope you find one!!
