as they are, in dietry needs, more akin to a rat than a mouse, they get my own brand rodent feed, supplemented with fresh vegetables, a little fruit, and protein in the form of cooked chicken and egg and so on. i get through about 15-20 chickens a month, so the bones are also then given to the rats, mice and multis, as they love to gnaw on them. it gives them extra things like calcium in the diet, and helps to prevent their teeth from growing too long on an artifically "soft" diet.
they also get cooked grains and pulses, cooked pasta and rices, breads, a small amount of cake type things (anything on the discount bakery isle in fact) noodles.. cornflakes (lots of good things in cornflakes) fish.. cooked potato.. wild bird seed mixes. basically, they get all sorts. i personally feel its better for them both in terms of basic diet, and also enjoyment of that diet, to have as much variety as possible. i have about 9 sacks of feed go into my basic rodent mix currently, (mixed corn, oats, barley, flaked pea, flaked maize, pig nut, dog kibble, rabbit food, grass nuts) and suppliement with the rest. different animals get different "treats" according to what their diet would be in the wild.. gerbils get one mix.. rats get another and so on. so yes, hence the chicken carcass in with the multis.. ![]() N
