Mods, sorry for chatting in classifieds!!!
I can't really add much to lou's post even though I keep both pouched rats and domestic rats. Our approach is a little different because I believe pouched rats do not enjoy being handled so we don't really try to 'hand tame' them as such. Whereas I would walk around with a domestic rat sitting on my arm or on my shoulder, my pouchies would hate this as they do not like to be 'restrained' as they see it (suppose they are not domesticated so it comes down to simple flight or fight instinct). We can pick our pouchies up to move them out of the cage etc and they occassionally jump on us of their own accord but generally, we open the cage door, lure them out with food and hand feed them so they take their fruit and veg etc from our hands each day and maintain a bond that way. I don't know about Gambians but Emins seem naturally ultra confident anyway and never seem to get defensive with people. Our big 4 year old is the most gentle and I feed her nuts without her taking my fingers off. I even handed her a cod liver oil tablet once! lol.. not only does she have a mouth the size of the euro tunnel but pouched rat's eyesight is terrible! If you want a rat who enjoys cuddles and sitting on you then I would stick to fancy rats but if you want a rat who is independant and fascinating to interact with and watch on a not too hands on basis, pouched rats could be for you. I think pouched rats are under-rated and mine are much more like owning monkeys than rats.

It's not sad, it's fantastic, the rats are not big enough to set the landmines off, that's why they are being used. They are also undertaking research into GPR's detecting TB in humans from smell alone, so far they have had an 80% success rate in trials.

Cheers for the PM Lou, I've sent one back.
If the rats aren't harmed in the landmine detecting then I suppose that's a good thing for them to be doing...if anything it raises the profile of the humble rat!

Thanks Nerys, but I've now collected one from Lou. He's mommy's little monster right now but I'm hoping I can get him to trust me...although Pouchie says she doesn't mind keeping her Emins' at arms length, I'd really like to bond with my Gambian (Ben...yes, after the film...after all Ben was played by a Gambian in the remake of Willard!). He's really shy right now but he's only a baby of seven weeks. Poor little fella! His dash for freedom the other night and my subsequent panic probably didn't help things much
