I only know of people wanting them! lol
If you don't find a rehome, hopefully you can get one lovingly raised by lou & ray because the only others I know for sale are at simons rodents (he has new babies) but they are a shocking £350 plus for a female ![]() I know the poor guy gets lots of stick but that price deserves it! grr

Cheers Pouchie, Lou seems to have a really good reputation on lots of forums!! That's always reassuring
![]() Yeah it looks like that's a pretty high price for just one, I've seen some go for £300 a pair! Do you find that they are happier in pairs (single or mixed sex?) or can they be kept as solitary animals?

To be honest, I wouldn't like to advise on Gambians as I have Emins Pouched Rats.
We have a four year old who lost her mate. We tried to introduce a young male to her and she went mad! She has a teddy bear which she always takes back to her nest and she is happiest alone. She will tolerate the other females however. We have two young pairs who are very well bonded and it is lovely to see them together. I would have thought either would be ok. Males are thought to be solitary in the wild and females sometimes band together. Therefore it might depend which sex you go for. One last thing, if you go elsewhere for one, just make sure you get what you ask for as a hell of a lot of 'Gambians' turn out to be Emins! This is how I discovered that Emins are not as rare as I once thought. They are pretty similar as Gambians are from Gambia and Emins come from a bit further down along Ivory Coast. Emins are thought to be more arboreal and are slightly smaller. If you find one, you can always try to send me a photo and I should be able to tell from that. ![]()

Hey, Gambians seem to do ok both singly and in pairs (ff or mf) . I have pairs and singles here. Introducing a new GPR to an existing one can be interesting (as pouchie stated above) but we have found a few methods which seem to work quite well
Agreed on the Emins/ Gambian mix ups as well, we collected some "Gambians" and they looked so different to mine and after talking to pouchie and her partner they were confirmed as Emins, The price for me reflects the time put in with them, they are a species that needs alot of human interaction from an early age to learn to "trust" people, and it also deters the impulse buyers. there seems to be a trend down this way with GPR keepers I dont know if its the same anywhere else but they seem to bond more with one person (generally the feeder/one that plays with them) |

Yep, definitely possible. We put two youngsters together on neutral ground and as soon as the female headed toward the male, he stood up and showed his throat in defence like I have seen mice & rats do. She immediately backed off and ignored him. We then put the two of them in the females cage and left them to it as he was obviously submissive enough not to cause a fight. For 2 weeks the male slept at the bottom of the 4 tier cage and the female slept near the top. Then one day we found them curled up together and they have remained bonded since. aww. sorry - bit off topic ![]() |

LOL dont worry I am going to join you in going off topic
thats so sweet, I always find it better introducing in the females cage as well, and have a water bottle on spray to hand, personally when introducing I now (this idea was given to me by a friend of mine) put the male in the females cage as you did, and if they seem to "rear up" I spray them both with the water bottle (not too much mind), they then spend so much time cleaning the water off themselves and giving me a dirty look, that by the time they are sorted they forget there was even an issue between them. I have not had this fail yet (but now I have said that you wait for the next introduction) |
