Default my currant orphans, as of tonight

for anyone who is intrested, these are what are living in my shed at the moment (it changes daily but these were all taken tonight) first off, 3 house sparrow nestlings, all from the same nest despite the size diference. these were found during some building work on a roof when they were only a couple of days old. the roofer took them home and stayed up all night with them keeping them warm and fed until he could get them to us the next morning. that is the main reason they are still alive as they are very dificult to rear from so small. they are now about a week and a half old.

this is a young kestrel that was kicked out of the nest by her siblings due to a shortage of food. she has only been in a few days and is still very wild, and a real pain to feed. this is actuly good as it will make her much easier to release.

and last, these two are Huginn and Muninn (Thought and Memory, after Odin's ravens), a pair of rooks that came in seperatly but are being raised together. these have to be my favoret birds of all to raise (hence the usename) as they are so inteligent. it is more like raising a monkey or a small child than a bird. these are also the only, non permenent animals I will name. I usualy don't do it to avoid getting attached and treating them as pets but these are always so individual that they have to have names. Huginn was hit by a car on her first flight from the nest and is suffering pretty servier brain damage, although she is improving daily. whether or not she will improve sufficiently to be released is not yet clear, as she still has a long way to go. Muninn was found running around a school playing field, all her flight feathers in tatters. her parents were around and calling to her for a while, but rooks generaly will not feed their young on the ground so they eventualy abandoned her when she could not fly back into the trees. she is also still very wild, although she will have to stay with us until the autumn when she will moult out her damaged feathers and regain her ability to fly properly.

Huginn. I chalenge anyone to look at that bird's face and not see serious thought going on in there. unlike most birds, most animals in fact, that glance in your direction, these make direct eye contact.

Muninn

They are beautiful Rooks. We regularly take in Jackdaws which have a passion for falling down the chimney! The longest one stayed was 11 months, we still see him up in the woods occasionally and its a great feeling seeing him alive, free and mixing with other jacks. Good luck with all of your rescues.

The rooks are fabulous!! My fave bird of ALL TIME has to be the crow so any members of that family are a personal fave of mine....id love one as a pet but then they are really wild birds so i guess they should stay in the wild.......However I have the greatest admiration for people like u hun that can dedicate the time and patience into rearing them and helping them get well again.........Carry on the brilliant work!!! lool
