Default Rescued a German Shepherd tonight.

Hi,

I got home at around 7pm from visiting my OH in hospital and got a phone call from the social services.
Someone had told them my phone number because a family were being evicted, the kids were going into care, and the family dog needed looking after.

They were given my number as it was the sister of a friend of my son being evicted.
The girl had said I 'might' take it in rather than it being rehomed through RSPCA.

Well she's here now. She's called Rebel, yes it's a bitch, and she is 8 yrs old. She seems very friendly.

Depending on the circumstances of the family Rebel may, or may not, need a new home in the next few weeks.
I am told she is good with kids and house-trained. We'll soon find out as I'll do a temperament test in the next few days!!!!!
I've said I'll hold onto her for a few weeks unless the family tell me I can re-home her.

I'll get some pics on tomorrow hopefully. She's quite a pretty girl for her age.

I know about the implications with medical problems. But thanks for the advice. A local rescue is going to help with hip x-rays etc. It is so difficult to home elderly GSD's that they are happy to help with veterinary care as long as I will keep her here.

The full story is that the family were given a 48hr notice of eviction so I can only presume drugs or firearms were involved.
Kids in care dog PTS if I hadn't got invoved. I'd have taken the kids if I was offered.

I've been on to the local GSD rescue and they have offered me a voucher to have her speyed for free due to the fact I am suspicious about her being in whelp.
The owner just seemed a little dubious about when her heat was and my instincts kicked in.
She is to be speyed next Tuesday and then I will decide whether to keep her or not. It will be difficult as she is so good.
I just need her to accept the cats. She is already friends with my other dogs.
She is house trained and good with food. She, more or less, does everything she is asked to.

John came out of hospital yesterday and even he said if she is fine with the cats we can keep her and he hates GSD's. She is just so loving and well behaved.

She has put on 5llbs since being here, that's 48hrs.

We've changed her name to Pebbles and she seems to be answering to that a lot better. I'm now suspicious as to whether she is stolen so I'm going to advertise and see if I can find out. She's getting speyed whatever as she's far too old to breed!!!!!!!
I know where the owners, who gave her to me, are staying so if she is stolen I will give them up to the police.
Whateveer happens she's here for a few weeks at least anyway.
More time for John to fall in love. He's a pushover, literally with his operation, so she's unlikely to go anywhere providing she gets used to the cats.

Here's a pic. Not a very good one unfortunately.

I would love to it depends on whether she will get used to the cats!!!!
She's great with kids and other dogs. Behaves in the house. House trained. Obedient.

I'm sure she would be better off with someone who has had sheperds before though.
I have had many different breeds, generally large breeds, but never a GSD.

Without the help we are getting from the local rescue and North East GSD rescue I'm sure we wouldn't be able to keep her.

If she is stolen I would rather her go back to her 'proper' owners also. She has obviously been looked after at some time in her life and I would put bets on it it wasn't where I got her from.
I'm going to whsere they are staying in the next day or two and I am going to tell them that she need veterinary treatment and see what they say.

I hope you get to keep her too! But you are right, if she has been stolen she should go back to her original owners.

I wish we could have her, but it's not practical with all our cats - they've enough stress/behavioural problems without creating more by introducing a dog into the family!

Devastating really, cos after we lost our last one at just over 12 years old (about 15 years ago) I always promised myself we would get another GSD once I wasn't working full-time. Now I've got the time for the dog, the cats are creating the problem!

I'm going to try and introduce her to the cats this evening.
I'm going to put her in a crate and see what her reaction is to them.
If all goes well I'll muzzle her and keep her on a long line for a while.

The intention, at the moment, is to get her speyed and find out all her little indiosincracies(sp) and then try and find her a new home. Unless it turns our she is stolen and then we will obviously return her providing the owner wants her back and is in a position to give her a good home.

I am going to put an ad in the local 'trader', with as little info as possible, in case of cranks.

Thanks basky,

She is considering her age.
I've been advised to wait to spey her for 2 weeks in case she hasn't been out of season for very long. She's booked in for the 26th September so she's here until then at least. The vet is prepared to spey up to 5 weeks in whelp.
It's hard to think of her being that far on but with her being 8yrs old it's not a good idea for her to have pups.

We've decided to call her Pebble as she answers to that whereas she didn't answer to Rebel. This is the reason, along with other things, why I am thinking she may be stolen or 'aquired' illegally.

I've placed the ad in a region wide paper but I haven't put any details other than that she is a GSD and that I aquired her under 'suspicious' circumstances.
