Re - mez's comments.........

I suppose the massive reduction of scotch pine trees to make furniture had nothing to do with it then? you cant blame the greys.... they didnt choose to come here.

anyway.... back on topic...

i managed to hand rear my grey squirrel on goats milk alone, and he is doing fine. was nursed every 90mins (day and night) for 3 weeks, after that he lived in my pocket at work and let me know when he was hungry.

my only advice is CONSTANT HANDLING! mine is tame but hates being grabbed. if you can get them used to that you'll have a great time with em.

but if you do get bored the recipe for squirrel pie does clearly state that you need 2 squirrels.

Well done you. Handrearing is always time consuming but always rewarding. Doesnt matter what animal it is. I handreared a Wild rat pup still pink and she survived reverted to wild and got released.

Goats milk is good, I think probably better than Lactol, but it's always useful to add a little ABIDEC (baby multi vitamins) and a pro-biotic yoghurt to help the gut flora. The amount is 1 teaspoon of yoghurt and 2/3 drops of ABIDEC to ¼pint of goats milk. Cover it and keep it in the fridge, but throw out what has not been used after 24 hours and make up another batch.

Baby squirrels eyes don't open until they are about 5 weeks, so I presume you are toiletting them after every meal, as this will still need to be done. Their lower incisors erupt at about 3 weeks and this is a good guide to working out how old your kittens are. Between 4-5 wks they'll weigh about 50-60g and they don't wean until they are 7 weeks. However, I have to say that my reds weighed in at 65g when they were 4 weeks old and 85g at 5 weeks old and reds are smaller than greys!

The recommendation by experts who've been doing this for years is that up to 5 weeks they should be fed every 2 hours between dawn and dusk! From 5-7 weeks, every 2½-3 hours and then 7-10 weeks every 3-4 hours.

I hand reared 2 red squirrels last year from 14 days old, but every 2 hours would have been extremely difficult for me to adhere to because of work commitments, so I fed mine every 3 hours, day and night, moving onto 4 hourly when they were 5 weeks old and it worked for them.
