Default Rinkhals

Anyone keeping these in the UK? definately on my list of Hots i want to keep.... one of the very few elapids anyway. any idea the sort of price these go for over here? are there many about? i've been told by at least 3 people that you can't even give em away! so would like to know how much truth is in this statement.

Hi all

Have not seen these for a few years and then only wild specimens....
Just wondering in captivity do they do the playing dead technique when startled ?
We were told to avoid like the plague !!!! as an aparantly dead snake will suddenly come back to life again within a moments notice..... So DO NOT PROD WITH A STICK !!!!!!!

Thats a nasty Ooopsie LOL

Best Regards

Chris

H. haemachatus?

They are accurate!

can they not be little pains in the arse to get feeding? I thought where a lot of cobras are greedy little buggers WC rinkhals can be a bit arsey.

I know someone who had two, one of which you'd have free handled if you were a moron (very very placid) and one that was very shy and spat a lot.

He said frog/toad scenting worked wonders.

interesting little snakes, would like to get to know a bit more in the flesh oneday.

i first saw one in hamm last year. the guys i travelled with had one for sale and we had to transfer it to a bigger tub in the hotel room. only a juvenile. it was fairly placid but did spit a fair bit at the camera lens. i fell in love with said species

"do you want (spit) to get her (spit) out of the (spit) viv for (spit) me. Change her (spit, spit) water then she can (spit) have a chick (spit)."

"i'll leave that one with you mate, i'm fine over here in the corner watching the big bitis do nothing thanks!"

I didnt think Rinkys were as bad. still a good idea to wear goggles though.

I think they tend to be *either* very very shy and stressy and spitty *or* a snake you'll never/harldy ever see spitting.

Of course that still means that a mask or goggles should be worn, even in a room with one that "never has spit mate" you'll still find me cowering in the corner holding my snakehook like a club wearing full face gear!

Give me something 15ft long swinging it's head about trying to get it's teeth in me any day of the week. Spitting snakes see me turn into a bit of a wimp.

"your holding that snake hook the wrong way round mate"

"no i'm bloody not, if that thing comes near me i'm hitting it with the thick end!"
