i read the metro (local london paper) and i have never read this story before, come to think of it have never even herd of it till now, and something like that would make uk news!

so it sounds like bollocks to me! even if there was a story that never go published or reported on nothing ever leaves the thames alive, especialy if its in a box!

Hello.
This did happen a number of years ago. If memory serves it was a large C. atrox found in a polystyrene box. The snake was taken to London zoo originally but I have no idea where it ended up. This story is going back some years now, 10+ I would think. If anyone wishes to find out more it featured in an episode of "animal hospital".

David.

I too have heard this storey about it but the version i was told the box (tupperware or simlar) was washed ashore and it contained a cobra. . .

I think it is just an urban myth to be honest.

Actually, I do remember that story! It happened about ten years ago or more! They actually showed the polystyrene box on the telly. It had a small hole in one side through which one of the lads that "fished" it out of the river put his finger to pull it ashore...

DavidR is right, it was a Western Diamondback.

Okay, it was a stupid thing to do, whoever actually put the snake in the box in the first place deserves to go to jail but come on, one incident in that long a time?

In all my life I can remember only two negative news articles about illegal/unethical venomous snakes being kept as "pets" in the UK. This was one. The other was still a good few years back about a man (I forget who) that was caught with a large collection of illegal (unlicensed) snakes in his garage.

Suffice to say, justice was done, his collection was confiscated, he was fined and banned from keeping more... in my opinion the hobby does not need people like this anyway. However great their self-professed love for the animals may be, it does not give anybody the right to break the law... however inconvenient it may seem.

Doesn't mean the rest of us can't (lawfully, of course) keep venomous. Nor does it mean that ALL venomous owners are doing anything illegal or wrong. On the contrary, it is the greater number of individuals that work within the law, to whatever standards the local authority imposes, and with a serious and sensible conduct that define this hobby. The actions of one or two individuals should not taint the whole hobby, but rather cast a light over the great efforts made by those who DO follow the guidelines and do things the right way!

Viperkeeper, if whoever put this up on your site has a memory that long and the only argument against the keeping of venomous snakes that he/she can muster is a decade-old, over-sensationalised story from the lunchtime news then I don't think you have much to worry about!

p.s. STILL love the videos. Keep up the amazing work, you are at the forefront of the hobby in the eyes of thousands and your videos are defining it in the public eye as not just a pastime for sociopaths and weirdoes but a new generation of mature, serious and sensible keepers with the best interests of their animals at heart!

BTW congrats with the newly feeding Bitis parviocula! I look forward to watching these little beauties grow on your channel!
